Tenancy notice confusion

Was looking to see how much notice would need to give on our rented property that is now in a periodic tenancy. The agreement states:

"...the Tenant acknowledges that he must give the Landlord not less than one month’s written notice, which must also expire on the last day of a period of the continuation tenancy"

Am not totally clear on what that actually means though! The tenancy commenced on the 1st of the month, so does that mean would have to give 1 month's notice, but would have to run to the end of a month, e.g if gave notice on 15th Sept, then would have to let tenancy run until 31st Oct, not the 15th Oct?

I read this to mean you have to give notice from the 1st of the month not midway through a month. I've always given my notice a month from my rent payment date.
