Place to stop between Cornwall and Chester

We're travelling from Cornwall to Chester in October and would like to spend a day and a night somewhere in between. Anyone got any good suggestions please?

Another call for Hereford here. A sweet little, underrated city.

How long are you intending on staying at your stopover?

Don't stop in Salisbury or Stonehenge. They'd be miles out of your way. Hereford s m t exactly on the way either.

Depending on how far into Cornwall you are, I'd either stop just before Bristol (somewhere like Tyntesfield) or a bit after. Tewkesbury?

I like to stop at National Trust places and usually plan stops round them.
