Im considering the idea of joining the world of social media. I have a Ds 5yrs old and seem to miss out on all the local events. Im old fashioned and have to rely on word of mouth or local advertising for events also small and major companys posts on there. Plus im never in the loop for my sons clubs when they close or open for weather issues or breaks etc etc. However on the other side I do NOT want DH family knowing what im upto, who my close friends are and considering they have no contact with my DS i dont want them informed of his activitys or whereabouts. Not sure what to do. Very confused right now 😕. Im also quite a private person so for example ppl at work would not be on my list of friends and i dont particularly want them knowing what im up to either. At the same time it would be nice to share photos, events, chat with friends.

Use an adapted version of your name (first and middle name, or an adapted spelling), a generic profile pic and don't add any friends, just groups. Use a new email address specifically for the purpose and omit your phone number so no one sees you on 'people you may know'. Ignore any requests you may receive and deny all knowledge if anyone asks ('No idea, must be someone else with a similar name to me.')

There are visibility settings. No one can search me by name. No one can see my posts outside of my friends list. No one can share my posts. No one can see my friends. My Fb is locked right down.

People an only see what you put in. Dont post anything you don't want shared, ever.

It is perfectly normal to have a slightly different name (professionals do this all the time) eg if your name is Amanda Jane Smith, you might have your visible name simply as Mandy Jane or M J Smith

it is also perfectly normal to 'follow' companies or people or clubs and never ever post - it is just a live news feed really.

If I can do it - you can do it! Grin

When you've set it up - the is a 'view as' button - so you can see what other people see. In my case - nothing !

But , the down side is, you will be treated like 'troll' or a fake account.

I echo the poster who said about a second email address - and do not have your mobile visible either. I've never filled in any personal details, no school, uni or work history
