Selling an engagement ring

Sharpkat · 26/08/2019 16:43

I have been unengaged for over 10 years. As I do not have a job at the moment and the ex fiancé has just got married I feel it is time to sell my engagement ring.

Problem is I do not have the certificate for it. Think it cost ÂŁ6k. Platinum band with an almost carat diamond. Very traditional.

Have called the shop we bought it in in Hatton Garden three times now to discuss selling it and they never call me back.

Any ideas on how to get the most money for it? Live in London. Not a hope in hell of getting the certificate though.

TIA

I doubt you will get more than 15% of the original cost back.

I agree with Belgravian, unfortunately. Resale value plummets as soon as a new piece of jewellery leaves the shop, a bit like cars.

I have to agree with the above posters.

I agree, the resale on jewellery is very small :(

Resale value is small compared to retail BUT metal prices are particularly high right now so if ever there was a time to sell - now is it.

Papers etc don't matter. Any decent jeweller will be able to tell how many carats/colour etc

Take it out with you and pop into a few places to get a price for sale. Always compare- there can be a big difference from place to place as many just assume you're desperate to sell.

Assuming you made a typical buy, in Hatton Garden, I'd expect a ÂŁ6k ring to be about 1.5k to ÂŁ2k

Unless you bought very well. There's always exceptions.

There is very little value in second hand rings. If possible keep hold of it and when you’re in a better financial position, trade it in for something else or have it made into something new.

Thanks all. I will pop up to Hatton Garden when I can in the next couple of weeks.

I don't have a job right now and am struggling to find one so need the cash and also it is just gathering dust.

Will see how I get on.
