Envelope here, it's clearly an E and not an O!

sofato5miles · 26/08/2019 14:07

Depends on posh the person to whom I am speaking is

madcatladyforever · 26/08/2019 14:10

For pities sake it's En

Legomadx2 · 26/08/2019 14:11

Onvelope. In the same way that it's eye-ther not ee-ther

PullingMySocksUp · 26/08/2019 14:12

Some people say OM velope...

KeepStill · 26/08/2019 14:12

'En' to rhyme with 'ten' unless I am speaking French.

WorraLiberty · 26/08/2019 14:14

I know a lot of people who say 'Umvalope' Grin

I say Envelope.

Worgust · 26/08/2019 14:14

It’s envelope, unless you’re talking about pushing it, and then it’s ONVelope.

Thems the rules

Sparklfairy · 26/08/2019 14:14

I always think it's when pretentious people try and make it french sounding (i.e. en route). Same people I know who say 'restauran' without the tea in an effort to sound superior french.

As for ee-ther or eye-ther, I use both interchangeably!

Sparklfairy · 26/08/2019 14:15

T not tea!!

WrongKindOfFace · 26/08/2019 14:16

I use both. I can’t stop saying it now.

KeepStill · 26/08/2019 14:19

I know a lot of people who say 'Umvalope'

Come to think of it, one of DH's childhood neighbours used to pronounce envelope as 'umbelow'. Grin

I always think it's when pretentious people try and make it french sounding (i.e. en route)

But what do you say -- 'en route' to rhyme with 'ben sprout'?

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 26/08/2019 14:22

@WrongKindOfFace I have just burst out laughing as I too am sitting here scrolling and repeatedly saying
ooooonnnnvelope
envelope
and even had a little go at "restauran" in a fancy french accent Grin

evilharpy · 26/08/2019 14:38

Envelope here. Onvelope sounds very pretentious to my ears.

Livedandlearned · 26/08/2019 14:54

Cafetière sounds pretentious too

SistersOfMerci · 26/08/2019 15:02

I say Onvelope but write envelope.

catsandkid · 26/08/2019 15:23

Oh god EN-velope all the way here! Drives me potty when people say ON-velope!

Equally annoying is when people pronounce forehead as for-red (I.e 'for' instead of 'four')!

PancakeAndKeith · 26/08/2019 15:28

On-velope is the correct pronunciation but hardly anyone says it these days. I knew someone who used to say ‘elarstic’ for elastic.

You can’t argue how something is spelt to justify its pronunciation op. The two rarely go hand in hand.

PancakeAndKeith · 26/08/2019 15:29

'for' instead of 'four'

Four and for (and fore) all sound the same to me.

FairyFavour · 26/08/2019 15:40

I say onvelope, for-red and draw-ing rather than drawring.

FairyFavour · 26/08/2019 15:41
PeterthePainter · 26/08/2019 15:44

In deepest Sarf London we say Onvelope.

mygrandchildrenrock · 26/08/2019 15:45

Onvelope, and I’m not sure why, presumably my parents did. None of my children do though, they all say envelope.
I also say nothing but the rest of my family say nuthing. I obviously didn’t bring them up right!

PeterthePainter · 26/08/2019 15:46

Four and for (and fore) all sound the same to me

Me too. And it's forrid not "forehead"

TapasForTwo · 26/08/2019 15:50

I have been selling envelopes for over 30 years. In the trade they are always pronounced ENvelopes to rhyme with ten.

SwedishEdith · 26/08/2019 15:52

I say both, I think. How do people pronounce en route is they're so desperate to not sound pretentious?

For and four = same to me and I say forrid (like horrid) and fore-head.
