Envelope here, it's clearly an E and not an O!

onvelope - like the "en" in salmon en croute and en route. Its French, innit. Wink

MrsTerryPratchett · 26/08/2019 15:53

In deepest Sarf London we say Onvelope.

Coz we is posh, innit? And it's Saaf Laandan.

DappledThings · 26/08/2019 17:11

My dad is the only person I know who says onvelope. He also says albow and refers to his cousin Helin.

Thehouseintheforest · 26/08/2019 18:42

Fgs it's ONvelope !! Where were you all drugged up ???

TheYeaSayer · 26/08/2019 18:53

I've never been "drugged up" and yet I say "ENvelope" Hmm

MashedSpud · 26/08/2019 18:56

Envelope ✉️

Cookit · 26/08/2019 18:57

Wait, how are you possibly supposed to say four and for differently??

Smidge001 · 26/08/2019 18:59

Onvelope.

raspberryk · 26/08/2019 19:00

I used to pronounce it onvelope now i think i say envelope, it's kind of half way between the two though I think.

ifeellikeanidiot · 26/08/2019 19:03

Four and for sound the same Confused

TheYeaSayer · 26/08/2019 19:03

Wait, how are you possibly supposed to say four and for differently

Ah, but that's the very thing, isn't it? People pronounce things differently, usually because if regional variations. I say "fore" and "for" quite differently. That's not to say that my way is right... there are variations, that's all. Same as with envelope.

When people come on here and insist that theirs is the correct pronunciation it's really annoying.

Legomadx2 · 26/08/2019 19:08

I always think it's when pretentious people try and make it french sounding (i.e. en route). Same people I know who say 'restauran' without the tea in an effort to sound superior french.

@Sparklfairy I would NEVER pronounce the t in restaurant! Not to try to sound superior, but that's because it's how I have always said it, as has nearly everyone around me.

I think it's a regional thing, not an attempt to sound superior. FGS I couldn't care less about stuff like that, but I do see on MN people are easily slighted.

HappydaysArehere · 26/08/2019 19:15

Say onvelope. Always have.

IsadoraQuagmire · 26/08/2019 19:20

It's onvelope. And the T at the end of restaurant isn't pronounced.

EverTheConundrum · 26/08/2019 19:36

Those who say "Onvelope" do so to sound pseudo posh. Ignore them, it's envelope.

ErikaJayne · 26/08/2019 20:04

‘Onvelope’ pronouced the same was as ‘on route’ (en route).

TapasForTwo · 26/08/2019 20:06

I live in Yorkshire, and have literally sold millions of ENvelopes.

Cookit · 26/08/2019 20:08

Ah, but that's the very thing, isn't it? People pronounce things differently, usually because if regional variations.

I have no issues with regional variations I just can’t see a difference between four and for. I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone say them differently wherever I was (and I have lived and worked in most corners of the UK). I’m asking a genuine question. How do you say for and four differently?

Cookit · 26/08/2019 20:11

On envelope vs ONvelope the people I know who say ONvelope tend to be a lot older than the people who say envelope. Some things can be less regional and more generational.

OITNBfan · 26/08/2019 20:12

toothache or tuthache?

RocketRacoonsFurryBalls · 26/08/2019 20:17

It comes from the French ‘enveloppe’, hence the onv pronunciation has stuck around. I’m pretty sure both my parents said onvelope.

I don’t even know how I say it anymore. I think either way is fine.

Aberhonddu · 26/08/2019 20:19

This thread is driving me crazy, I'm sitting here saying Envelope over and over again. I've said it so many times I can't work out how I say it, I've reached the stage where I don't think it's a real word anymore.
I'm alone here so no DH to think I'm exhibiting strange behaviour.
I say Onvelope, I'm Welsh so it may be my accent.

SwedishEdith · 26/08/2019 20:21

I've decided I say onvelope as it's easier - I don't have to move my mouth as much.

CatkinToadflax · 26/08/2019 20:24

Envelope.
Fore-head.
Scon.

Lucked · 26/08/2019 20:26

Scottish and I say envelope. Restaurant absolutely ends with a ‘t’.

I say four and fore to rhyme with sore and for to rhyme with Thor.
