Posting for a friend - so name changed.

They are a little freaked out. They spent yesterday (all afternoon and into the eve) at the coast. On returning friend went upstairs and this is on one of her dc bedroom door - everyone is baffled on what they are and how they got there...

The knots in the wood are oozing sap.

ChessIsASport · 26/08/2019 11:00

Could the high temperatures yesterday have made some sort of sap in the wood melt and affect the paint work? Is it the best paint that is damaged or dirt on top of the paint?

ChessIsASport · 26/08/2019 11:00

Sorry cross post.

SunFunDango · 26/08/2019 11:01

Friend’s dh is a carpenter by trade - so I’d assume he’d know, they say it’s powdery and rubs off. They also have a few on an architrave...

Is there any way sunlight could be shining through something (shutters?) onto the door?

beetleaugust · 26/08/2019 11:15

I've got a little pot with a mosaic mirror design. We got a similar pattern on a door when we had the heatwave in June, think it was caused by the sun reflecting off the mirror and on to the door.
I've moved it off the window ledge now.
Wonder if it is something similar to that ?

SallyOMalley · 26/08/2019 11:16

Could it be marks as the sun moves round?

My m&d thought they had yoofs deliberately scorching their lovely wooden garden furniture. Turns out it was the sun reflecting back off a garden mirror onto the furniture! It was only when they saw a chair starting to smoke on a v hot day that they realised (after already having had words with the local community bobby!)

stayathomegardener · 26/08/2019 11:17

That's not knots in the wood bleeding sap; too close together and too regular.

BigMy · 26/08/2019 11:18

Are there any glass ornaments or reflective items around? I think the pattern suggests a scorching as the sun has moved/ set possibly?
The knots in the wood theory is interesting but thats a LOT of knots in a small area

Celebelly · 26/08/2019 11:18

Yep my bet would be the sun being magnified by something and burning the door. I'd recommend they check the room thoroughly as it could be dangerous.

SunFunDango · 26/08/2019 11:41

I’ll message re sunlight - see if this is a possibility- thank you

Ghosts

ClemDanFango · 26/08/2019 15:58

Definitely ghosts.

whensa · 26/08/2019 16:00

Intrigued! They're very regular and discrete blobs...

Aquamarine1029 · 26/08/2019 16:01

Looks like burn marks to me. I would be looking for some kind of glass item, crystal, etc. When I was a child, a neighbour's house burned to the ground because of a crystal sun catcher they had hanging in a window.

You could be on to something there.

A while ago one of our new UPVC window frames (are they naff? The wooden ones needed a heck of lot of upkeep though) started melting because of reflected sunlight off the magnifying side of a makeup mirror I'd stood on the windowsill.

Although my first thoughts were about the knotholes/sap thing.

peridito · 26/08/2019 17:06

place marking for update!

SunFunDango · 26/08/2019 19:54

We are away on holiday at moment. WiFi is poo. I’ll update when Dh gets an update from our friends.

This thread scares me! I'm always running back up the road to check I haven't left the hair straighteners/oven on. Now I have to worry about all my pots/mirrors/crystal sun catchers!

popehilarious · 06/09/2019 22:08

Did you ever find out, op? @SunFunDango

Fizzyboo · 06/09/2019 22:25

I'd say it's nails/screws underneath going rusty from moisture.

thesnapandfartisinfallible · 06/09/2019 23:07

Is that a child's bedroom door by any chance? Could be a reaction with residue from stickers.
