Anyone with a Chromebook?

Mine met an unfortunate merlot related death last night (dh knocked my entire glass of wine over it..should I LTB?)
It is definitely, conclusively, an ex Chromebook.

I don't need Windows and have an extremely elderly 10 year old macbook left attatched to the printer that can just about managed to print if coaxed and given 20 mins to wake up. I just need another chromebook for daily stuff.

Any recommendations for something light, fast and under £400?

Watching with interest as considering getting a chromebook. But wait, can't they connect to a printer?

SaskiaRembrandt · 26/08/2019 09:32

I don't have a recommendation for a new one - mine is a couple of years old now - but you should easily get one for less than £400.

Is it definitely fubar? Have you tried the leaving it in a bag of rice to dry out trick? that can take a couple of days but does (sometimes) work.

SaskiaRembrandt · 26/08/2019 09:33

Yes, Chromebooks can connect to a printer.

Catmar · 26/08/2019 09:35

I've got a lenovo chromebook that I got off amazon a couple of years ago. They are pretty cheap and basic, but mine's been brilliant - would recommend.

StillMedusa · 26/08/2019 09:38

They can connect to a printer...but not my printer ..as it's also very old!

I pad perhaps. You can get reasonable priced printers with the Apple print facility so you would be able to print from your iPad and your Mac.
Hardly use my Mac book now as my iPad does what I need on an every day basis. It also takes great photos.

I have an Acer Chromebook. Very happy with it.

DH as an Acer Chromebook, some of the keys have come loose, which is very annoying.

ASUS C302CA-GU010 360 Degrees Rotatable Full HD Touchscreen Chromebook Flip 12.5 Inch Notebook - (Black) (Intel Core M3-6Y30 Processor, 4 GB RAM, 64 GB eMMC, Chrome OS) www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01MU9LS52/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_Ln6yDbQT5M5W7?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

This is probably one of the best Chromebooks around. Only thing it doesn't do is run Linux apps but that's a fairly niche requirement.

I have one of these myself and have loved it. Very fast, very light, runs android apps, touch screen, current under £400.

I really like my chromebook .ideal for me as just Ebay Mumsnet! and general surfing would certainly recommend !

HilaryBriss · 26/08/2019 11:41

I've also got an Acer Chromebook and love it. I use it daily and will definitely get another if anything ever happens to this one.

Trooperslaneagain · 26/08/2019 11:43

I got one free from Uni - IME - absolutely shite.

Would not recommend at all.

BigbreastsBiggerbeard · 26/08/2019 11:47

All my chromebooks were under £200 - one from Argos and the others from ebay - second hand but perfect condition. One was £95! Typing on one now - a Toshiba. Another is a Lenovo, and not sure about the others. You shouldn't have much difficulty finding one. Would you want a touchscreen one? None of mine are but it could be a useful feature.

I got a chromebook from Amazon last year on Black Friday for £129. It’s perfect for my needs (mostly the web and word processing). It’s an Asus but not the one a PP linked.

PeterthePainter · 26/08/2019 15:43

I have an Asus chromebook (using it now). I wouldn't say it's the best available - it's a bit slow - but it was the cheapest John Lewis had.

SaskiaRembrandt · 26/08/2019 15:55

Mine is an also an Acer, I'm very happy with it.

SwedishEdith · 26/08/2019 15:59

Chromebook as well but also have dodgy keys - think there was an issue with some about 4-5 years ago. I'll get another though.

greentheme23 · 26/08/2019 16:08

I have an Acer- dirt cheap from Argos but it's lasted me years. Love it.
