Why does my MIL not want my dh to shave his hair off?

She wouldn't tell me why when I asked she just went very strange about it, the only answer I got was "well you know..."

She popped round, dh is out, I happened to mention that he is going to shave his head next week as he's fed up of his receding hairline. She was horrified. Really properly upset kept telling me to persuade him not to!

Is it because he's her little boy and she thinks he should have hair?! Because he's been going bald for about 10 years, it can't be a shock to her!

Maybe she thinks is 'common'?

Floralnomad · 24/08/2019 16:34

Maybe she thinks he will look like a thug .

My aunt was v upset when her son shaved his head - in her eyes the only people with shaved heads were football hooligans, or skinhead neo nazis. She thought he’d lose his job, be stopped by the police all the time, no “respectable” girl would look at him etc.

It’s an old fashioned view, but it was genuinely upsetting for her. Hespent some time reassuring her about how fashions had changed and that it was ok to have a shaved head now.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 24/08/2019 16:40

I wouldn't be thrilled with my DP shaving his head. Even if he was going bald. It feels so final, and I love his hair.

HeddaGarbled · 24/08/2019 16:40

I think it’s just generational. When I was young, men who shaved their heads tended to be football hooligan/National Front sort of people. I know that’s no longer the case but she may not.

foxessocks · 24/08/2019 16:44

Yes I suppose I hadn't thought of it that way. But it's just hair...!

Anchor I do feel a bit strange about it but tbh he really has very short hair already and I think it might actually look better this way.

He's self conscious about his receding hair and I think if he actually makes the decision himself he'll feel more in control and more confident. Which is what I said to my MIL but it didn't make her feel any better!

Maybe he has a bit of an odd shaped head? More likely it's because she thinks a shaved head makes people look like a thug.

BEDinhalfanhour · 24/08/2019 16:46

Buy him a
vest as well. MIL will love that Shock

foxessocks · 24/08/2019 16:48

munch I don't think he does but me and dh have discussed the possibility of him having a weird head that we didn't know about - so we are prepared 😂 maybe MIL thinks he has!

Grin

Actually you have reminded me that MIL was also opposed to him getting a tattoo (which he didn't in the end) so actually you could all be right with the thug thing!

All a bit odd though since her ex dh has a tattoo and pretty much a shaved head...🤔

His hair his head his choice.

Belgravian · 24/08/2019 17:15

There is the association with skinheads but unless your husband acts like this I think your husband will look great.

ZaphodBeeblerox · 24/08/2019 17:16

Are all of you of the same cultural background? In some cultures one only shaved one’s head when you suffer a close bereavement.

PapaShango · 24/08/2019 17:26

My dh has shaved his hair completely off. He was going bald at quite a young age, so decided to shave it all off. I love it but I suppose he does look quite scary, if you don’t know him.

Don’t think people think he’s neo-nazi though. He’s mixed race!

Mumpower123 · 24/08/2019 17:40

If he wants to shave his head , fine. Mil sounds like a snob. He should get a load of tatts as well! Lol.

Newearringsplease · 24/08/2019 17:42

Ooo I love Russell Crowe in Romper Stomper

foxessocks · 24/08/2019 17:45

Same cultural background, I think she is a bit of a snob about some things actually.

SilverySurfer · 24/08/2019 17:53

Maybe she had something rude tattooed on his head as a baby and is horrified that it will be seen? Grin

Seriously, if she is a snob she may have the old fashioned view that it will make him look thuggish, which is, of course, nonsense.

CookPassBabtridge · 24/08/2019 19:04

My mum hates it when my brothers shave their heads because they look like thugs and they are just all flesh! My DP has hair down his back and has said he will shave it the day he recedes badly.. I'll be gutted. Hopefully hair transplants are cheaper then Grin (he has said he wants one)

Belgravian · 24/08/2019 19:50

@Newearringsplease it’s a great film.
