Help with toddler dropping naps

DD is 2.6 and has dropped his naps this week. He just screams in his cot and won't even fall asleep in the car, even after a long morning of activity designed to exhaust him.
If we push the nap later and he does actually sleep we can't get him to bed . He keeps going pretty well in the day but he's massively overtired and has started waking in the night again, culminating in last night when he woke at 8pm, an hour after going to bed, and screamed almost constantly till 3am! And despite this he's still bloody refusing to nap today!!!! After a few nights away staying at relatives with DH he seems to have got completely out of the habit of napping (thanks DH!) and I can't get it back. We went through this with DD but we introduced quiet time for her where she lay under a blanket and watched a film, but he just won't do this. I'm completely at my wits end, and totally exhausted. Has anyone got any tips on how to make an exhausted toddler nap?!
