How much money do you have left each month

Just that really. Once I pay everything I owe every month, including a bit put aside for going out (not much though) and £50 for miscellaneous stuff, I have £384 left. It doesn't seem much to me and tbh I've been completely oblivious to it as I occasionally boost my earnings with selling stuff so my bank account goes through periods when it's quite healthy.

We have about £600 after all essentials are gone. It disappears though. This month we have had
MOT £47
New tyre £70
Secondary school uniform: £250
School shoes £110
Birthday presents £50
And that's without any extra bits and bobs so virtually all gone.
Need to get to a position where we have a fund for those things but there is always something. Grrr

YanTanTethera01 · 23/08/2019 23:15

Thank goodness I don't have young children to worry about anymore! Can remember the school uniform days but I earned a lot more then but now I'd be panicking.

Do you mean the day before pay day? Or after being paid and paying bills? I put £200 into savings, and £50 into my “fun fund” each month. I have about £850 left after bills for food, petrol, clothing, clubs etc. Usually have about £50 left the day before payday. Feel like it should be more, but if anything came up I do have the savings I can dip in to.

After I pay my essential bills I'm left with around 320 to lastme the rest of the month for food etc but it doesn't ever seem to last for me and 2 little ones ! 6 pints of milk a day costs a fortune once added up then they genuinely eat me out of house and home an then it's always someone's birthday an then Xmas an school uniforms. Then new clothes for summer or winter if I don't get passed any lol list is endless and my money isn't Sad haha but I agree selling the odd bits and bobs does help keep me a float if I'm struggling the last few days x

TravellingSpoon · 24/08/2019 07:01

Anything I have left the day before payday is put into my short term holidays savings. Its never a lot, this month it was £6.48.

I budget really carefully but on a low wage its hard. This month its been uniforms to buy, kids being home and my dad's birthday.

I do save quite a bit of my wages though. That always goes out on payday so that I am not tempted to spend it.

Asdf12345 · 24/08/2019 07:07

At the end of the month we average £1500 into savings after everything has been paid for.

CheeseChipsMayo · 24/08/2019 07:07

Fortunately dont pay rent/mortgage anymore so monthly banked income usually averages at a little over1k after outgoings=fuel/bills&food etc.

crisscrosscranky · 24/08/2019 07:10

After all outgoings, savings and normal spending I have around 10% of my monthly income left.

TheMessyCleaner · 24/08/2019 07:13

-£1,500

puppymouse · 24/08/2019 07:18

I transfer more than I know I have available into savings and then work backwards, moving money back when my account gets low. It's not an ideal system but I'm a terrible saver and never budget so it prioritises the savings upfront. I'm always zero or minus zero technically by payday in my current account.

I highly recommend Plum for eking out some extra savings too. It takes little amounts you don't really notice.

Cornishmum00 · 24/08/2019 07:34

Anything between £200 and 0 depending on what has happened that month

Ellabella989 · 24/08/2019 07:40

I have about £550 left after everything else has been paid for (mortgage, bills, private pension, food, spending £, travel costs etc) which goes into my savings.

ohmysoul · 24/08/2019 08:03

After all bills including food, petrol, haircuts, birthdays, Christmas saving (separate to usual savings) etc have been paid, we have £460 left. Of that, we save £180, have £100 each for whatever we like and then £80 to spend on miscellaneous things that come up for DD (e.g. This month she needed new wellies and I'll be paying for September's dance lessons next week out of it too). Always feels like not very much though.

EleanorReally · 24/08/2019 08:04

on a minus the day before pay day, well borrowing from the savings

Doodlebug5 · 24/08/2019 08:06

After bills... (not food or petrol) on a 5 week month £1700 on a four week month £1400

happypotamus · 24/08/2019 08:08

Usually significantly less than nothing. Entered an unauthorised overdraft a week before pay day (after using all my authorised overdraft). Fortunately DH got paid very early this month, presumably because of the bank holiday.

coconuttelegraph · 24/08/2019 08:10

How do you have the same amount left each montb? How is every month the same? I don't know what I'm going to need to spend from one month to the next, if I don't have enough I have to put something off until the next montb, I thought that was fairly normal.

TryingAndFailing39 · 24/08/2019 08:14

After all bills, school fees, (numerous) kids’ activities, fuel and food we have about £500 a month left over for fun and emergencies but I try to save a couple of hundred a month towards a holiday although I often don’t manage to as it all soon disappears! We only pay school fees 10 months a year so we catch up with anything that needs doing in the house in those 2 months or book a holiday with the extra money.

PostNotInHaste · 24/08/2019 08:22

I don’t know how much i’m Going to spend each month but have a savings account where what is in it is all allocated into sections on a spreadsheet,

So each month I put away a certain amount for the cars which covers MOT, service and tax. There is a Christmas fund, birthday fund, pet fund, clothes fund, medicine and expenses fund, hair fund, car breakdown and house insurance fund so enough to pay annually at renewal. I also have a week 5/find to cover months where there are 5 weekly shops instead of 4.

I imagine there are apps that would do this much more efficiently as it’s a bit faffy but by going through everything I don’t get too many nasty surprises .

WalkAwaySugarbear · 24/08/2019 08:24

We have around £1200 after everything, which is quite a lot especially if you consider we're average earners. We're fairly frugal with most things. This goes into savings until we have enough for a new kitchen, lump sum off the mortgage, holiday etc.

Verily1 · 24/08/2019 08:49

We spend every penny every month.

BelindasGleeTeam · 24/08/2019 08:57

There's about £800 left here. We put £500 into savings, £300 into holidays/as fund.

We budget £200 each a month 'fun fund' for our clothes and extras like cinema trips, fish n chips etc. If we are frugal than can go back into savings but not normally.

HotChocolateLover · 24/08/2019 08:57

We have about £800 a month left over every month after all bills are paid. However, something always comes up so we’re down to £150 now but fortunately it’s my payday on Tuesday and DH’s next Friday.

EleanorReally · 24/08/2019 09:12

can never have enough savings, tooth ache, dentist cost a lot, pet issue, vets are expensive, illness, expensive prescriptions
clothes for work
car issues

EleanorReally · 24/08/2019 09:13

thanks to Stepchange, whereas before we might have put things on a credit card, we no longer do this.
