How much money do you have left each month

YanTanTethera01 · 23/08/2019 23:08

Just that really. Once I pay everything I owe every month, including a bit put aside for going out (not much though) and £50 for miscellaneous stuff, I have £384 left. It doesn't seem much to me and tbh I've been completely oblivious to it as I occasionally boost my earnings with selling stuff so my bank account goes through periods when it's quite healthy.

@coconuttelegraph re your query,
The best thing I ever did was to have all bills going out on pay day, that way I know what’s left each month. I went the same same each month and my outgoings are fixed annually, as are my savings - usually save more then my standing order though.

PurpleWithRed · 24/08/2019 09:20

For personal spending and a bit of saving about £1300. But we are empty nesters with the mortgage paid off and relatively comfortable pensions already sorted.

TheSharkInTheDark · 24/08/2019 09:24

£69 after absolutely all essential bills including food and petrol etc. But only until the end of the year then DS's nursery fees will be significantly less so will be £400+ then thank god!

Thanks Daphine but my work is contract and partly seasonal so I don't know when or how much I'm going to get paid.

Obviously I know how much my monthly bills are but not what else is going to come up. I just manage by not going too mad with any spare money.

unlimiteddilutingjuice · 24/08/2019 09:29

I'm cruising towards payday with about £100 left in the account so I feel like I'm doing pretty good.
Last month I had a holiday and a kids birthday. I'd depleted everything in the first week Blush Thank you, Butlins and your relentless and cynical upselling.

marblesgoing · 24/08/2019 09:51

It varies each month depending on any extras.

Last month after my share of bills, food, petrol, holiday payment any owed out I had £400 left however six weeks holidays so paying for days out etc and school uniforms have depleted my account to about £40 to last till 30th of this month Sad

Dh has probably double that left a month and blows it on himself and crap so this month things are changing.

I seperated our accounts so we have a joint bills account that we both pay half into to cover all bills food and fuel for the month and a joint savings we each Chuck a bit in each month then we keep what's left of our individual earnings in our own accounts.

I did it because dh is so crap with money. It was working well however the last two months he runs out of money before pay day so I'm having to sub him or pay his half for things so depleting my chances of saving for things I'd like.

Put my foot down again and told him from this month on he needs to see what's due for the whole month (eg a family birthday towards end of next month and a weekend break)and told him to put an amount back out of his account to cover them things because I'm not.

Fingers crossed he sorts his shit out.
Have told him I could divorce him over his financial management.

Youngandfree · 24/08/2019 10:01

We have reduced our bills dramatically lately. So per month we have;
Mortgage on property 2 -100
Electricity 50 approximately
Childcare (term time only) 160
Life insurances 70
Phones 70

So our outgoings are about 450 each month

Obvs we have to then get food, fuel and save for various yearly bills (car tax &ins, house ins)
Our leftovers after the bills above are approximately 3,500k

crisscrosscranky · 24/08/2019 11:18

@Youngandfree are they your only outgoings!? No gas, water rates, council tax (x2 if you have two properties?), TV license, house insurance, line rental, mobile phones...

crisscrosscranky · 24/08/2019 11:24

These threads (along with 'How much do you spend at Christmas' threads) are pretty useless unless its to make people feel inferior. Without all the personal financial history of each poster how much they have left is arbitrary- Having £500 left if you earn £10k a month is less impressive than having £100 left if you earn £1600 a month.

Also, everyone appears to be counting different things in their figures- some include food and fuel and other don't etc. Please don't base your opinions of your own financial situation on posts from strangers on the internet. Most people I know in real life under 40 have very few savings, live month to month and occasionally rely on an overdraft- MN is not representative of the norm in any way!

Youngandfree · 24/08/2019 12:22

@crisscrosscranky yes we are not in uk do no water or council tax, and we live rurally so we have no gas connection either. No tv so no tv license. Phones I stated in my list that means Mobile phones.house insurance we pay all at once as it’s cheaper.

AmateurSwami · 24/08/2019 12:22

-£100

S0CKS · 24/08/2019 12:36

Pay day Tuesday i have a salary balance of approx £320.
Ill transfer that into my savings as i don't have anything else i need to buy.

Asta19 · 24/08/2019 12:46

I am contracting so `I get paid weekly (which I much prefer) so each week I pay what needs to be payed, do my online grocery shop (but it’s just me so that’s not every week) then leave maybe £30 in my current account in case I fancy a takeaway or something and everything that’s left gets moved straight into savings. I can buy clothing etc from my weekly money if I need to so savings are there just for holidays and large purchases.

SuzieBishop · 24/08/2019 13:16

Last month we had about £200 left which was not like us! I’m on maternity pay at the moment so even more surprising. This month we’ve had a lot on so we’ve had to pop £100 across from our savings to keep us going till payday.

Frith2013 · 24/08/2019 13:20

£0.

Living on benefits and carers allowance at the moment. We were just breaking even before the Tories took away the housing benefit that almost covered the interest on my mortgage, then cut council tax benefits, then cut my oldest child’s tax credits and child benefit. (He’s 18 but still at college).

Now we are more overdrawn with each week. I have £4 to last 3 of us until Tuesday and that happens almost weekly now.

DefinatelyAWeeGobshite · 24/08/2019 13:24

Payday is Thursday coming for me and I’m down to £7, it’s been an expensive five week month!!!

I should have approx £500 after bills but then there’s diesel which changes each month depending on my shifts plus all the additional crap that comes up.

Lobsterquadrille2 · 24/08/2019 14:39

About £2k but my outgoings are low and it's just me and DD. Neither of us drive.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 24/08/2019 14:52

I get my tax credits weekly so it's topped up throughout the month. As I'm only part time every penny of my wages goes on essential household bills then tax credits pays for the food shopping and luxuries.

catismychild · 24/08/2019 15:07

I have approx £700 left after mortgage and bills paid. By the end of the month that's normally all gone though, fuck knows on what. I'm terrible at budgeting.

ErinO · 24/08/2019 15:37

About 750. We pay an extra 100 off the mortgage, around 150 goes into savings, we spend about 100 on essentials for DS (he's young and grows fast so we go through clothes like nobodies business) we spend a lot on days out and probably a bit too much on takeaways! And the rest is for social lives or things for me and DH. That's two incomes though!

GrapefruitGin · 24/08/2019 15:39

After bills, around £1k.

Lulualla · 24/08/2019 15:42

I have around £800 after bills & expenses, food, kids pocket money, and entertainment/activities. It usually goes into a savings account but sometimes I will spend a little bit more on a special weekend.

Isbrexitoveryet · 24/08/2019 15:53

-1500
We’ve been like this since dp lost his jop

greentheme23 · 24/08/2019 16:06

£2097 left after mortgage and bills but..I'm not sure where it goes.

Mammyloveswine · 24/08/2019 16:12

I rarely have anything left but then I know I could cut right back (and should do!). We are wanting to move so really need to start being frugal!

I'm tempted to start cycling to work and back so that will save me 80 quid a month in bus/train fares! Might have a trial run this week... if it takes less than 30 mins then it's worth it! Better for the environment too!

Only one meal out a month...no more popping out for tea once a week!

Need to sell some of the kids toys to make room and money for Christmas.

Also need to start online food shopping as I stick to my list much better! Although today my slimming world friendly fish cakes were substituted so I'm annoyed as that's 4 quid wasted... Angry
