What’s your favourite piece of classical music?

I love classical music but when my MH is poor (as it has been for a year) I can’t listen to it (no idea why!) but it’s now improving and I want to get back into it!

But all my fave pieces feel a bit over listened too so what are your favourite pieces!

TIA

Pachelbel canon in D - it's what I walked down the isle to

Aisle*

Debussy's Suite Bergamasque (Clair de Lune) played by Jonas Vitaud. It's the tune played at the end of Ocean's 11 and my dad taught me to play it on piano when I was young. It never stops being lovely.

I love Father Kolbe's Preaching from the Truman Show, too, which I suppose isn't classical music but is still beautiful.

Try scala radio for inspiration, or Jess gillams podcasts. I love Vaughan Williams lark ascending, John Williams theme for Schindler's list, Dvorak new world symphony, Sibelius ( lots of his) schostakovich 5th symphony ( not if you're feeling delicate!) Smetana's ma blast, Telemann recorder music, Vivaldi guitar/ mandolin concertos, Bizet's Carmen, Carmina burana by Orff. Honestly recommend scala as there is so much out there and they have some really good shows. Also classic FM. All the proms are on the BBC sounds just now, many are on the iPlayer to watch which can be interesting too as I like seeing all the players. Some quite random things in the prom and I like the little intros, really helpful to set the scene. Hope you rediscover the joy of music, so much out there to discover. Happy to recommend endless other pieces!

Im Treibhaus - Wagner. Is currently my fave!

Dapplegrey · 22/08/2019 08:44

Wedding Day at Troldhaugen - Grieg
Both Mendelssohn’s piano concertos
Blumenlied - Gustav Lange.
Grand Duo Concertant - Weber
Invitation to the Dance - Weber
Schubert Rondo in D (four hands)
To name a very small fraction of classical music that I love.

BoreOfWhabylon · 22/08/2019 08:50

Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez, played by John Williams.

CherryPavlova · 22/08/2019 08:52

Schubert’s Ave Maria. I walked down the aisle to it.

stucknoue · 22/08/2019 09:00

Symphonie Fantansique I love, Tchaikovsky's piano concerto is another favourite, at home I'm mostly subjected to Shostakovich because he is DD's favourite composer, or Bach because she's learning the organ and it's good for her level. I'm going to an all female composer concert soon, dd is singing in it - Clara Schubert I believe features heavily

Oddsocks2 · 22/08/2019 09:07

Mozart Sinfonia Concertante
Faure requiem
Schubert String Quintet in C
Scheherazade (Rimsky Korsakov)
Gershwin Rhapsody in Blue

Meckity1 · 22/08/2019 09:30

Danse Macabre Saint Saens
Sonata Pathetique Beethoven
Fingals Cave Mendelssohn.

If you put one of your favorites into YouTube, you may find some interesting new pieces as suggested videos.

Allegri's Miserere
Karl Jenkins Benedictus
Mozart's Laudate Dominum
Verdi's Va Pensiero

Many more but I shan't go on and on!

For inspiration try the InTune mixed tapes on Radio 3 - they are available on the Sounds app. Each are 30 mins long and have a bit of a theme, for example, the one I listened to on my journey to work today was "Music of the Gods" which had music related to Bacchus, Pan, Jupiter, Apollo, Venus and Mars by Delibes, Mouquet, Mozart, Britten, Cambefort and Holst. There is no talking in between the prices and if you get a piece you don't fancy you can just skip forward to the next one. I have found a few absolute gems through it!

CheeseChipsMayo · 22/08/2019 09:55

Gymnopedies No.2, followed by Gymnopedies No.1 (Erik Satie). I'm not that keen on the third movement.

blackpinkinyourarea · 22/08/2019 10:17

Tchaikovsky - Waltz of the Flowers

MostlyAmbridgeandcoffee · 22/08/2019 10:18

Mozart’s nacht music

Grinchly · 22/08/2019 10:19

Most of these.
Plus Faure's Requiem. Most of all the In Paradisum. I get goose bumps thinking about it.
And lots of brass band stuff.

Tish008 · 22/08/2019 10:20

Not in the classical genre but if you enjoy the piano I recommend Ludovico Einaudi

raspberryk · 22/08/2019 10:21

Another Debussy and Erik Satie fan here x
