What’s your favourite piece of classical music?

I love classical music but when my MH is poor (as it has been for a year) I can’t listen to it (no idea why!) but it’s now improving and I want to get back into it!

But all my fave pieces feel a bit over listened too so what are your favourite pieces!

TIA

The album Coruscating by John Surman

Chopin - Nocturne Opus 9 No. 2
Mozart - Clarinet Concerto in A - Second Movement
Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue

I've been learning piano for just over a year. I want to be able to play Gymnopedies eventually.

Bach, Cello suite No 1.

I love the Cello, wish I could play it.

buggerthebotox · 22/08/2019 11:51

Chopin's Fantaisie C Sharp Minor.
Beethoven's 1st Piano Concerto.
Mozart's Requiem
O Fortuna - Carmina Burana - Carl Orff.
Adagio for Strings - Barber.

I detest Pachelbel's Canon, Mozart's 21 in C (Slow Movement) and Moonlight Sonata (Slow Movement).

..and, as someone who has to telephone the DWP on a regular basis, Vivialdi's Four Bloody seasons...

isseywithcats · 22/08/2019 12:00

hall of the mountain kings from the peer gint suite by greig, starts off really quiet and low key and ends uo full on orchestra,
opera either madam butterfly or palliachi

TheMaestro · 22/08/2019 12:00

What kind of music do you generally like OP?

For my MH at the moment, really helps. Beautiful, powerful, moving, and with a mood enhancing glorious finish!

Toddlerteaplease · 22/08/2019 12:01

Basse Danae from Capriol suite by Peter Warlock. Especially when played on the beamoth that is the organs if Liverpool Anglican Cathedral

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 22/08/2019 12:01

Some of my favourites:

Saint-Saens -The Swan

Debussy - La Fille aux Cheveux de Lin

Vaughan Williams - The Lark Ascending

Bach - Concerto for two violins in D minor - slow movement

Sarahlou63 · 22/08/2019 12:06

Beethoven's Ode to Joy. Take 5.40 minutes of your day to watch this....

WalkersAreNotTheOnlyCrisps · 22/08/2019 12:08

Aah I often put that video on Sarahlou63, definitely worth a watch Smile

Echobelly · 22/08/2019 12:10

Vaughan Williams - Fantasia on a theme by Thomas Tallis. It's great if you're feeling sad or tense, I put it on and cry my eyes out because it's so beautiful!

Bach - Double violin concerto in D minor

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 22/08/2019 12:21

Puccini's La Fanciulla del West, its set during the American gold rush centred around the heroine Minnie (I'm totally in love with her, she's a take no prisoners, no nonsense character but a sweetheart too) lots of drama and I always find myself totally lost in the plot and beauty of the soaring music that really makes me feel like I'm there (The Met New York's version with Westbroek and Kaufmann is my favourite)

captainpantbeard · 22/08/2019 12:22

Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto no 1 - I once saw it performed live by the amazing Yuja Wang

(not this one but just as mesmerising)

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 22/08/2019 12:23

Pressed send too soon.

Glad to hear you're on the up and I hope it continues for you Thanks

ScreamingValenta · 22/08/2019 12:26

Faure's Pavane

NotMaryWhitehouse · 22/08/2019 12:45

Saint-Saens Carnival of the Animals, especially The Swan.

A bit cheesy, but The Watermill, by Ronald Binge I think.

MrsArabin · 22/08/2019 12:59

Bach. Pretty much all of Bach, to be honest.
But if I was pressed to name one piece, it would be the Partita No. 2 (played by Giuliano Carmignola for preference).

I also love Carmignola's recording of Four Seasons. I know people moan that it's done to death but his version.

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 22/08/2019 13:00

Thank you! And thank you for the well wishes, it’s not been a particularly easy year but I’m hoping I can find joy in music again!

Sarahlou63 that’s blown me away! Amazing! Thank you!

powershowerforanhour · 22/08/2019 13:31

I like those popular opera compilations, I'm too much of a philistine to sit through a whole opera waiting for the good, famous bits :-)
Favourite- tie between Rusalka's Song to the Moon and the Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves
Happy mood- Je veux vivre dans ce reve
Feeling a bit tragic- E lucevan le stelle
Got the rage at someone- Diana Damrau singing Der Hölle Rache

clary · 22/08/2019 14:27

Haydn trumpet concerto
All beethoven symphonies esp 1, 7, 8,9
