article here

The Amazon is being cleared to make way for farming and mining. The fires can be seen from the ISS.

Are you really surprised about this? If you are poor and the government are actively encouraging you to take some rainforest so that you can grow food for your family, then you are going to do so.

You aren't going to understand why the rest of the world isn't turning their land into rainforest if it's really that important a thing to have. Global warming and environmental destruction is too vague a concept and why should it be your poor country that is ment to solve the world's climate problem and not the rich first world?

pottedshrimps · 22/08/2019 11:12

Perhaps Brazil should be paid to protect this area or have sanctions imposed on them. I'm not blaming individual farmers.

They probably should be paid for keeping it, but how do we make sure that the citizens benefit from it and that it's not just pocketed by the government? The same goes with other countries that also have rainforest.

pottedshrimps · 22/08/2019 12:07

It depends how far you want to take responsibility for other countries citizens I suppose. The planet is supposed to be trying to reduce carbon to benefit everyone and ensure the continuation of human life on earth.

It really does feel like the kid on the coffin doesn’t it? Goodbye Mother Nature. Goodbye endangered animals. Goodbye air.

InTropicalTrumpsLand · 22/08/2019 12:17

Citizens aren't benefitting from this. Those interested in a destryoed Amazon are multimillionaire companies looking for minerals, oil, etc.

The idea of using the Amazon area for farming is a laughable one - the soil there is extremely poor, the immense diversity in flora is due to how quickly lost leaves, etc decompose due to the heat and humidity. Mind you, that won't stop them from trying.

As a Brazilian biologist, I truly despair.

It's bloody terrifying.

The amazon rainforest is cleared all the time to make space for cattle’s to graze so people can eat animal products.

People have no business being upset about it if they are still buying these products. They’re contributing to the destruction of the planet!

Apileofballyhoo · 22/08/2019 12:35

I am finding it very hard not to lose all hope.

Skittlenommer · 22/08/2019 12:38

A plant-based diet is a HUGE step in the right direction!

I know what you mean, ballyhoo.

It's hard not to feel like we're doomed. Sad

zebrasdontwearbras · 22/08/2019 12:55

I signed that petition fwiw.

The Brazilian Environment Minister has been heckled.

Which products do we need to avoid?
