Teaching how to tell the time.... any tips?

My 4yr old really wants to learn how to tell the time. She’s really good with reading numbers right up to 30. I’ve bought her a learning clock from Dunhelm (attached) but only just learning her letters and some 3 letter words so definitely can’t read the words on the clock yet.

I’ve tried teaching her the basics but it’s tricky and she’s getting frustrated with anything other than o’clock!

I wonder if it’s too early? She’s five in nov and starts school in sept. If not too unreasonable to start now, tips on how to do it?

It’s too early provably. Start with ideas of time of “before” and “after” so do we normally have breakfast before or after we get dressed? Or similar ideas rather than numbers themselves

I wouldn’t say it’s unreasonable as such but it is early. If she knows “o clock” at 4 that is pretty brilliant. Writing her name and familiarity with phonics would probably be more beneficial in terms of her starting school so maybe try and focus on that. Explain to her that that’s what people do at school and she might be keen. If she is insistent about learning the time try online games, the focus is less on “reading” the time and more on knowing it.

Ok will do.

She’s just constantly asking “when will that happen” “how long is 5 minutes” “when is half past 12” etc

I try and explain using a clock in the simplest terms possible, but it’s going over her head.

The O’clock thing started with “what’s the time mr wolf” and me showing her those times on a clock. She can read o clock times easily now. So maybe I should just be satisfied with that and try and manipulate everything so it happens on the hour!! Lol
