Have any of you taught your children to be bilingual - can you help with a survey?

Hello,
I’m a very old poster here (is that you, UCM?, judgeflounce, shewhocannotbenamed, penis beaker etc)

I’m doing a course on applied linguistics and I need to do a survey on parental attitudes to bilingualism.

You need to have a child (or children) who you’ve brought up bilingual.

Can you DM me and I can send the survey link to you?

Thank you!

Sorry, I meant to ask if you could fill the survey in.
I realise I pressed post vs preview!

I'm happy to do it 😊

WallyWallyWally · 20/08/2019 14:07

I can do it - though we have "made" them bilingual by living in another EU country and them going to school / having friends in that language, rather than us teaching them to be bilingual.

Done. However, your definition of home language doesn't apply to my family, where we speak both languages equally at home ( we are all bilingual). Where I live, this is fairly common (dad one nationality, mum another, both speak each other's language)

Troels · 02/09/2019 23:39

I've filled it in. Hopefully I filled it in right.
I was a bit confused by the majority languge as two languages are used around us quite equally, and Dd learned the second one when we moved here (age 8) and now speaks like a native of both languages.

Cherrysoup · 02/09/2019 23:47

Your survey doesn’t allow for both languages being used equally. I think it’s a bit limited. Do you have a tutor? Maybe run the survey past them regarding that aspect. What if one language is used at home, another outside, so pretty equal?

Surveyhelp · 03/09/2019 00:37

Cherrysoup- do you mean both languages used equally in the home?
My tutor is away now so I can’t check back, which is a pain.
Thanks for your advice, though ...

Done!

Fiderer · 03/09/2019 08:20

Done also for my 3. Agree about both languages being used equally at home as it was for us.
Doing it for 3 - always been interesting to me how each is bilingual but each is different. 2 are stronger in one language (not the majority despite schooling now college) and the identity question, so many variables.

NutButterNutter · 06/09/2019 22:17

Done!
