There seemed to be a few Joni fans around.

I'm listening to Hissing of the summer lawns on my new victrola suitcase turntable.

The full extent of my Joni Mitchell knowledge is that one song in Love Actually. It's a damn good song though.

sue51 · 19/08/2019 20:27

I've loved her music since the sixties. They have been the backdrop to my life.

LucilleBluth · 19/08/2019 20:29

Love love love. Little Green is heartbreaking and my favourite JM song.

IHeartKingThistle · 19/08/2019 20:30

Oh, oh, A Case of You.

I can only listen to it when DH isn't around, he's not keen on Joni Sad

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 19/08/2019 20:32

Carey! My favourite song of all time. I learned it when I was working in a slightly poncey bar as a student, so v happy days.

LuxuryWoman2018 · 19/08/2019 20:32

Blue is one of my favourite albums and I like to imagine myself as Joni when I listen. It’s a Sunday afternoon album

Emmapeeler · 19/08/2019 20:32

Love it all. Especially Carey, Case if You, River, Morgantown.

Blue is a great album to start with. Contains the only Christmas song, other than fairytale of new york, that can be listened to outside of Christmas.

I've owned many copies of blue. Some stolen, some lost.

It was one of my life's goals to play case of you on guitar without retuning, and my strings falling off. I managed it.

I can forgive it being written for Gram Nash. It's so beautiful.

Carey get out your (co) cane, I think was probably for the other part of the triad, David Crosby.

Oh you're a mean old Daddy but I like you fine. Crosby was allegedly quite a handful in those days.

Carey's my favourite :)

Emmapeeler · 19/08/2019 21:00

I didn’t know those were about Nash and Crosby! I find that era/genre of music really fascinating.

LucilleBluth · 19/08/2019 21:03

The Circle is in the new Quentin Tarantino film. Fits the era and story perfectly.

LucilleBluth · 19/08/2019 21:03

Game, I pad.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 19/08/2019 21:04

Blue and Hissing of Summer Lawns are my favourites.

Edith and the Kingpin was the first Joni song I heard. I love Little Green and Case of You especially. Both albums remind me of 1984/5 when I was 19 and discovered her in a FWB’s record collection (before the term FWB existed...).

Juliet Stevenson and Alan Rickman sang Case of You fabulously in Truly Madly Deeply but I’ve banned myself from watching it because of the inevitable snotty crying. Love Actually presents a similar problem.

DH doesn’t like Joni’s voice (yes I know I should really LTB, but he’s otherwise lovely) so I listen to her in the bath or when he’s out.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 19/08/2019 21:09

Oh and River is the best Christmas song ever.

wanderings · 19/08/2019 21:14

I love the song Both Sides Now - we used to sing it at primary school.

allhalekale · 19/08/2019 21:19

I love the Hejira album best (although Blue and hissing of summer lawns are great too). I first listened to it when I was traveling in Canada when I was 19 and I could really relate to the songs as a lot of them are about people you meet in life travelling.
I think her lyrics are amazing. Poetic but down to earth. My favourite is in song for Sharon “we’re each so deep and superficial, between the forceps and the stone”.
Great thread idea! Grin

Amazing YouTube of Joni on piano, singing Woodstock.

Such amazing raw talent at such a young age.

marvellousnightforamooncup · 19/08/2019 21:43

I was listening to Ladies of the Canyon album over the weekend. She sounds so young on it and very naive. All the men she's singing about are stringing her a crock of shit, especially in Conversation and The Arrangement. I didn't notice when I listened as a teen, I thought she sounded so grown up and cool.

I also count Carey as one of my all time favourites.

chinam · 19/08/2019 21:45

I love her. She could sing the alphabet and I'd still listen to her.

Mileysmiley · 19/08/2019 21:49

Jungle line. Just magical.

WeshMaGueule · 19/08/2019 22:09

I loooooove Blue. All of it but especially A case of you. And Ladies of the Canyon. Chelsea Morning.
