Bikes

What do people do about new (to us) bikes. Are they for birthdays only? As needed through the year? And what about the old bike if not needed for a younger sibling? If they are sold does this go towards a new bike? But how does this work if the new bike is a birthday present? Or does the child get the money as it was their bike? Thoughts welcome!

Weve only ever done the first balance bike as a present.
After that, bikes have been as needed (and poor DS2 usually gets his brothers cast offs).
So, not as presents in this house.

DS has a spring birthday so has always got something outdoorsy for it (scooter at 2, bike this year)
Don't know what i'll do when he's older, and when DC2 comes in Jan.

Thank you. We had done first balance bike and then first peddle bike as birthday presents, but was wondering how to do it in future. Also as dd has outgrown her bike with a birthday approaching, but then was wondering how it would work if we sold the old bike to part fund the new one..

DS has had bikes as he needs them, and old bikes are sold to fund the new one - we ride enough that he needs a properly fitting bike and growth spurts means thats not in sync with birthday/christmas.

If they need the next size and it’s months until their birthday then we don’t make them wait for the birthday- they get it when the need it, but they won’t get loads for their birthday. Mine aren’t that old though so don’t necessarily understand the value of things and will often want a toy that they like the look of but isn’t very expensive. I guess that approach won’t work so well when they’re older and wanting more expensive stuff.

Not as presents generally, but surely that’s a bit budget dependent? Bikes that fitted and worked were a pretty essential requirement for quite a lot of our family activities.

Didn’t have the second sibling hand me down issue however I would recommend buying a good quality bike second hand (frog. Isla) then using it for all children before reselling.
