Just seen this article. I'm so worried about the future.

I was getting annual travel insurance for my parents for £300 when they were over 90. Their holidays cost a LOT more than that!

chicaguapa · 20/08/2019 18:24

State retirement age will now always be 10 years earlier than the average life expectancy. I thought that was always the plan, though they should/could have changed it before the baby boomers had all enjoyed their 30 year retirements with state pensions funded by the generation X. Hmm

itsallabitcrap2 · 20/08/2019 18:32

Yes chicaguapa the bloody baby boomers, it's all their fault. If only they'd all die a bit sooner. (I am a baby boomer, BTW and at least 11 years away form state pension age. I don't resent the earlier baby boomers their good fortune at all, except for the ones who go on about avocados and the younger generation.)

Don’t blame baby boomers, the oldest of us are only 74! Blame the previous generation - my dad drew his state pension for 34 years, I doubt I will - or anything close to it.

RosaWaiting · 20/08/2019 18:44

“They need less money then, as they aren’t going out as much.”

I find this sort of planning quite bonkers. I wonder it links to their sales pitch? I imagine the cost of care, and if the NHS goes or is weakened, will be very high.

itsallabitcrap2 · 20/08/2019 18:45

That's an interesting point, Alsohuman. No wonder that generation are Silent! Keeping their heads down and avoiding blame.

RandomMess · 20/08/2019 18:45

The people at fault are decades of government that were too cowardly to have raised the pension age a long long time ago. If they had we would all have prioritised private pensions paying out at 65 rather than being trapped now.

They have all deliberately ignored this car crash

Alsohuman · 20/08/2019 18:49

To be fair @itsallabitcrap2, most of them are dead now!

HelenaDove · 20/08/2019 19:01

my parents are The Silent Generation My mum retired 4 years ago when she was nearly 80

Dad retires at the end of this month Hes 83

Alsohuman · 20/08/2019 19:05

Come to think of it, mine were the Greatest Generation, born 1916 and 1918. Born during WW1, grew up during the depression, young adult life during WW2. If anyone deserved their pensions, it was them.

CaptainMyCaptain · 20/08/2019 19:40

My Dad had 30 years retirement, he died at 92 - he did his bit in WW2 and was hardly a baby boomer. Baby Boomers were born after the war.

RandomMess · 20/08/2019 19:55

My Dad was born in '41 so is coming up 78, he got a golden handshake and retired at 52 😭 he's in good health tbf

It's the stuff of dreams! He didn't have to pay towards my student grant, nor my brothers, had a subsidised mortgage rate via work (civil service relocated him). He was the era of the economic blip.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 20/08/2019 20:05

The first people likely to be affected by such a change are those born between March 6, 1961 and April 5, 1977. Fuck. That's me AGAIN!!!!!!

When I started working it was 60... then 63 was mooted, then 65 brought in. I've planned for 65... we've planned for 65 each, put away money so we can do something with our retirement, DH deserves it, he works shit hours, in a shit, physical job! He has had his "You have 2 years, umpty days til retirement" letter, They can't move the goal posts now!

Gaaaaargh!

HelenaDove · 20/08/2019 20:11

Economic blip? Is that the new name for progress.

Its obviously time for the regress then.

The gaslighting over this issue is really something else People are told they need a certain no. of NI contributions to qualify for state pension ...............oh but wait wait wait no no no those contributions are paying for todays pensioners and round and round and round we go and round and round and round we go.

Welcome to Waspi world @CuriousaboutSamphire.

HelenaDove · 20/08/2019 20:35

Did we really think that when they came for the Waspi women and the younger partners of pensioners that they wouldnt come for the rest #niemoller

HelenaDove · 20/08/2019 20:39

That's an interesting point, Alsohuman. No wonder that generation are Silent! Keeping their heads down and avoiding blame

Well sort of in my DMs case If she hadnt hid in the cellar during the war with her siblings and my grandparents she would probably be dead.

Thanks for that.

HelenaDove · 20/08/2019 20:44

She was born in 1936 Spent years working the fields from seven years old. Came to the UK at 24 and spent a few years working in a school then a hospital then 50 years in factories before retiring two months before her 80th birthday.

PasDeGeeGees · 20/08/2019 21:40

I hate this fucking government.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 20/08/2019 21:45

[lame cheer] @Alsohuman

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 20/08/2019 21:56

It’s not just this gvt - it’s been creeping up for years now.

RosaWaiting · 20/08/2019 21:57

Helena - excellent way to sneak in an 80s classic Grin

I don’t understand generational blame. We can’t help when we were born. I mostly blame politicians, especially Tony Blair, for deciding that London property should be a millionaire’s playground, with knock on effects across the country.

itsallabitcrap2 · 20/08/2019 22:19

@HelenaDove I was making what I though was a light hearted joke and taking the piss out of those who blame the Boomers for everything , genuinely sorry I if I offended you. The Silent generation aren't to blame (my parents were both of that generation, my dad fought in WW2 as did all my uncles).

It's the government that's to blame. They are fucking all of us over.

itsallabitcrap2 · 20/08/2019 22:21

Me too @PasDeGeeGees, but people will keep voting the bastard Tories in.
