Who are your favorite lady comedians?

I'll start off with Lucille Ball.

OP posts:

“! Why do people have to get offended over every little thing ?“

I don’t. I object to things which are sexist. Do you think there is the remotest chance the OP would have asked for our favourite gentleman comedians? No. Probably not even favourite male comedians. Comedian is default male. Women are a subset.

BertrandRussell · 18/08/2019 11:01

My favourite comedian is currently Sindhu Vee. Incredibly funny-and an extraordinary life as well.

Violetparis · 18/08/2019 11:04

Kathy Burke, love everything about her.

Smack The Pony was good. I watched all the "dating video" compliations on youtube again the other day- still funny.

HandsOffMyRights · 18/08/2019 11:14

I also love Julia Davis.
'Camping' and 'Nighty Night' are two of my favourites.

Alice Lowe is great.

As is Sharon Horgan.

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are both excellent, and extremely talented comedy writers

JoySuckClub · 18/08/2019 12:08

Would favourite comedienne have been okay?
The noun actress is still used by many.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 18/08/2019 12:09

Kerry Godliman does an extremely funny stand up act.

viques · 18/08/2019 12:12

Sniggering a bit at anyone describing Joan Rivers as a "lady".

There was not enough soap in the wprod to wash her dirty mouth.

viques · 18/08/2019 12:13

Oops , slippery fingers. World.

AndSheWas85 · 18/08/2019 12:14

Jo Brand is always good value, her book is great too, she mentioned she was a mumsnetter.

Kathy Burke love her. Glad we are seeing more of her in the media lately.

Roisin Conaty is fantastic and so is Gameface.

The fact that women on here object to the innocuous use of the words ‘lady comedians’ shows how humourless many women are and that we’ll never be as funny as men.

viques · 18/08/2019 13:00

Belgravian the word lady is not innocuous. It is all too often used to belittle and demean women , to imply that women , and their opinions, are both inferior and of less value than men and men's opinions.

It is a weasel word, like banter, which is used by some people to disguise a deeper meaning and antipathy . Many women find it offensive because it reminds us of a time not so very long ago when we did not have equal rights in this country but that state of affairs was justified by societal assumptions about the place and value of women, or 'ladies' as we then were. Regretfully we still don't have equally and I think it is important to chip away at remaining inequalities, including those that are embedded in our language. The words we use reflect our thinking, and our thinking is reflected in the words we use, to effect change we need to be aware of this. Why do you think the trans community is so determined to change language use? Unless we want to be called ciswomen or ladies for ever more we need to take a stand.

Reading the list of women in this thread I am reminded of how much of a debt we owe them for the years they spent in grim comedy clubs beng jeered and humiliated for having the temerity to believe that women are as funny as men. Almost more than any legislation put through parliament they have been responsible for changing mindsets and delivering the belief that women have the right to stand alongside men as equals.

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 18/08/2019 13:06

Also a shout out for Ellie Taylor, she’s a hoot.

Back in the day I was obsessed, and I mean obsessed (even though I’m straight I ADORED her) with Daisy Donovan.

She had one series of her own comedy vehicle and it was ace. Like Pulling though, it was cut down in its prime.

TanteRose · 18/08/2019 13:13

Well said viques

For the record, Victoria Wood.
Dawn and Jen.
Jo Brand.

And Kathy Burke Smile

DGRossetti · 18/08/2019 14:12

Fern Brady.

Have seen Sindhu Vee and Bridget Christie (twice) - excellent as were Josie Long and Rachel Parris.

Never considered French & Saunders stand-ups in a classical sense.

Joyce Grenfell ?

Housewife2010 · 18/08/2019 15:50

Shouldn't it be "comediennes"?

BertrandRussell · 18/08/2019 16:28

“Shouldn't it be "comediennes"?”
Depends. What year are we in?

ElizabethMainwaring · 18/08/2019 16:32

Bertrand, op is unsure what a comedian is. They think that it is anyone who is amusing
