How to have a nice smelling house?

Biancadelrioisback · 16/08/2019 21:25

My house smells like nothing. I'm sure it will have a smell (all houses do) but I just want it to smell nice.
I have tried candles (hate having them lit though) and reed diffusers, I have a plug in in now and it all still smells like nothing.

What do you use?

I don't like artificial fragrances of any sort, so I just open the windows every day so the house smells fresh. Sorry, probably not helpful Grin

shinynewapple · 16/08/2019 21:55

I wouldn't mind if my house smelled of nothing. I just want to ensure it doesn't smell either of dog or DH's last visit to the toilet!

shinynewapple · 16/08/2019 21:58

Sorry I'm answer to your question - a combination of opening the window, shake-n-vac when hoovering, febreze on the sofas, frequently washing cushion covers, tumble dryer sheets and the odd air freshener dotted about but I don't like those with too strong a fragrance.

Stravapalava · 16/08/2019 22:01

Cleaning - I use zoflora in a spray bottle for pretty much everything
Open windows
Candles - I like the non strong smells like "clean washing" etc

RozHuntleysStump · 16/08/2019 22:02

My house smells of piss.

ParkheadParadise · 16/08/2019 22:03

Fresh Air
I open the windows first thing every morning.

Badwifey · 16/08/2019 22:08

I make my own "fabreeze"

Just put half a cap of fabric softener into a spray bottle and top up with water. Spray on sofa, curtains beds etc. And allow to dry. It's also great if you're ironing something that's been in the wardrobe for a while. Spray on iron dry. Happy days.

I'm sad and like to mix my own fragrances!!

Badwifey · 16/08/2019 22:09

@Stravapalava do you water down the Zoflora?

CoughSplutter · 16/08/2019 22:09

If the house is clean it doesn’t need any fragrance...

drsausage · 16/08/2019 22:10

Artificial smells give me migraines so I don't use anything, and I'm grateful to the friends who don't use anything.

daphine2004 · 16/08/2019 22:11

Ventilation! Shoes not being worn or left in random areas of the house, bins emptied regularly and reed diffusers - I also like the fresh smelling ones and have them doted about the house. I’ve tried several different brands, but currently have some expensive ones from John Lewis which are long lasting and smell great.

GrapefruitGin · 16/08/2019 22:13

Very house proud over here and often told my house smells lovely, which makes me very happy. I have a wax melt lit when guests are due. I use carpet fresh on rugs/sofa. Dettol disinfectant spray great on fabrics also. I mop the floors with diluted zoflora. Plug in diffusers on in various rooms. Neat zoflora in sink with boiling water makes the entire kitchen smell glorious too. Mrs Hinch has great tips on her instagram (as annoying as she is!)

LickYouLikeACrispPacket · 16/08/2019 22:13

My house usually smells of clean laundry and cleaning products. I think if it’s clean and you sir it off by opening the windows on a daily basis is should smell nice. Do like my Tom Dixon candle though too. Hate cheap air freshener smells x

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 16/08/2019 22:14

Do you go away? I find we can only smell the house when we've been away for quite a few days. It was really sweet this month when got home from holiday with 16 y DS and he said when we were nearly home from ooh. We'll be able the smell the house. 🙂 It smells really nice but we just don't smell it day to day. It must be what others smell when they visit. Can't describe it though.

RedCowboyBoots · 16/08/2019 22:14

Get a bread maker. Make a small fresh loaf every morning. Sorted.

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 16/08/2019 22:15

I mean sweet that he was looking forward to it. Like I do. Love me some smells!!

SinglePringle · 16/08/2019 22:15

Exterior doors and windows opened every single morning and as soon as I’m home, whatever the weather. Just 30 mins twice a day works.

Empty the bins / cleans the bin regularly - especially if a meat / fish eating household.

Wash bed linens weekly. Cushion covers monthly.

Clean the house top to bottom weekly and dust / polish using proper polish.

I use Method cleaning products - no strong chemicals.

I burn different scented candles at different times of the year. Currently True Grace Lime during the day / Saturday and Stonehouse Plum Blossom and Musk on a Sunday.

Frownette · 16/08/2019 22:16

Potted lavender could work

Stravapalava · 16/08/2019 22:16

@Badwifey yes I do. Put about a cm of zoflora in the bottom and top it up with water. I use it to wipe down surfaces and it lasts forever.

merlotqueen · 16/08/2019 22:17

open windows, bake bread, brew coffee, fresh flowers.

What is Zoflora?

Badwifey · 16/08/2019 22:23

Thanks @Stravapalava

I bought this beautiful smelling natural cleaner in Aldi a few weeks back but find the smell disappears really quickly.

I use Zoflora on my floors and can smell it for ages after. Might give it a go in a spray bottle.

CrotchetyQuaver · 16/08/2019 22:23

Fresh air, we have the windows open a lot
Regular vacuuming
Changing sheets
I use a fabric conditioner but otherwise am not really a fan of perfumed anything. I can't bear the air fresheners they make me stuffy nose.
Our bedroom smells lovely this summer and it's down to the petunia surfinia in the window box outside.

Biancadelrioisback · 16/08/2019 22:24

I clean everything with zoflora (peach was my fav!) But the smell is gone almost instantly. Smells amazing while I'm cleaning then gone!

Both DH and I work FT and leave the house at 7:30am, back by 6pm so don't have time to bake a loaf of bread every morning.

Windows are open ever night, closed when we go out.

Bedding changed once a week, sometimes every other week, so are towels.
I don't use fabric softener and have been using an eco egg with zoflora in my washing machine. I always have air fresheners but we live on a tight budget so can't get nice ones. I've got house plants, DHs kit bag lives in the garage, hoover thrice a week.
Dryer sheets tucked in my sofa cushions and in wardrobes.

Still my house smells like nothing.

I mop with zoflora too, I use a cap full per 400ml as per the bottle but maybe it's too weak?
