How to have a nice smelling house?

Biancadelrioisback · 16/08/2019 21:25

My house smells like nothing. I'm sure it will have a smell (all houses do) but I just want it to smell nice.
I have tried candles (hate having them lit though) and reed diffusers, I have a plug in in now and it all still smells like nothing.

What do you use?

Fresh flowers when you can get them. Stock, freesias, grow sweet pea in your garden and harvest it through the summer to bring in.

Moomin8 · 16/08/2019 22:56

I love Zoflora, but if you've got cats please be careful as it's bad for them.

Hecateh · 16/08/2019 22:59

You shouldn't be able to smell your own house. Any scent should be so subtle that you are unaware of it. If you can smell it - even if a pleasant smell then it is too strong.

Ask a good friend if they sense pleasant or unpleasant air when they come into your house. So long as the answer isn't 'unpleasant' then you are fine.

The other answer is to buy essential oils (2 to 4) that you find pleasant, and some spray bottles. Mix about 15 drops of oil (combined) with 100ml of water (and add some white vinegar or salt to enable mixing). Shake well and spray around (lightly and daily).

My current favourite is raspberry, lemon and lavender. There are many combinations selected for different moods if you google it.

I still don't smell it [see above] (unless I microwave some) but others have commented.

I absolutely love the True Grace room diffusers. They are not cheap but last so much longer than any of the others I've had. And the glass jars they come in are beautiful. Whenever I walk past one ( I have at least 4 on the go in different areas) i smell the fragrance and it makes me so happy 😀 weird but absolutely true 😂

Moomin8 · 16/08/2019 23:03

@Ifonlyiweretaller - those sound nice - are any of them ok to use in pregnancy?

iknowimcoming · 16/08/2019 23:04

I really rate the Sainsbury's own brand home fragrance (particularly the pineapple or grapefruit- not as fruity as they sound) I use the reed diffusers and often get nice comments

Grandmi · 16/08/2019 23:08

My biggest problem is the amount of trainers and shoes in the hallway and dog smells!! I use plug ins ,Reed diffuser and windows open when possible!! Wash the throws on furniture weekly..the house still has a lived in happy home aroma 🙃

ImOffTheRadar · 16/08/2019 23:10

Open the windows and bake some bread.

HaileySherman · 16/08/2019 23:14

You'll become nose blind to any scent in your house i think, no matter what after a while. Myself, i don't particularly like fake fragrances (?) I much prefer the smells of essential oils. There are plenty of great ways to warm them up to make your house smell good.

WTF0ver · 16/08/2019 23:25

My house always smells of cooking. I arrived home the other night and all I could smell was frying smells, yuck. I need something make it smell pleasant but not into artificial, chemical laden stuff. Candles are fine but so often I buy nice candles and they smell of nothing when they're burning.

MissPollyHadADolly19 · 16/08/2019 23:25

Febreeze fabric spray, I can't recommend it enough!
Zoflora in the sink with boiling water overnight (hello spring/lemon zing/paradise peach are the best!)
Method rhubarb disinfectant spray is also to die for, I haven't been able to get any for a while but it's really worth it.

Oct18mummy · 16/08/2019 23:28

I got some white company reed diffusers placed around the house all different flavours it’s lovely getting a subtle whiff of loveliness moving from room to room

PancakeAndKeith · 16/08/2019 23:34

What is Zoflora?

Please hand in your MN membership.
Security will escort you from the building.

Percivalthebabyspider · 16/08/2019 23:43

I've heard it talked about on here but have no idea what it is either. Some sort of cleaner I gather?

Gilead · 17/08/2019 06:23

I’m with you, op, I want my house to smell of something. My kids bought me a wax burner and I love Yankee candle ‘ fresh cut roses’ wax melts. Smells like the real thing!

TipseyTorvey · 17/08/2019 06:47

I know this will be hated by the MN posse but as I have many males I the house I bought two of those automatic scent dispensers for the bathrooms. They puff every 20 mins and then I buy bulk variety fragrance cans so the smell changes. They make my house smell lovely. Definitely getting some of the true grace diffusers as a pp said. To those people who just open a window, I do that when I'm in but we're out most of the time so that just leaves the elderly cat smell in the house so I need something to override that.

HeronLanyon · 17/08/2019 07:21

If the house is clean and you wash bedding, cushions, put shoes away etc etc but still have smells it may be time to -
Wash rugs and curtains
Clean out u bends and plumbing generally.
Give washing machine hot clean cycle.
Check outside drain situation (not a bad time of year to do this anyway)
Check any loft space - clean it.
Check for any damp.
Ie the bigger things which tend to underlie any ‘surface cleaning’ improvements.

As for smell it no smell the op wants her house to smell. I personally don’t like a house to smell of anything and generally dislike fragrance (other than drying washing which I do love) but each to their own.

Currently selling my recently died ma’s house and if I could I would bottle the smell I get every time I open up. Didn’t realise her house smelled - a good smell - one I’ll miss.

good luck op.

SolitudeAtAltitude · 17/08/2019 07:25

Hush room spray

I like to open windows, for as long as possible, and spray a bit of Hush room spray on the fabric sofas

I also shampoo my dog when needed so she is not stinky (and wash the dog bed)

R44Me · 17/08/2019 07:32

I knew I'd heard something about air pollution in the home www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-35281338

I like the sound of the lavender in a pot.

Honestly, I don’t know how you can stand those things, they make me feel ill. I’d much rather smell the man smells!

PrettyShiningPeople · 17/08/2019 07:38

Yes, indoor air pollution is a thing. Perfumed air freshers create formaldehyde.

MondeoFan · 17/08/2019 07:39

I think
Zoflora
Method floor cleaner (almond)
Wipe down radiators with a cloth with Zoflora or fabric conditioner on
True Grace diffusers dotted around

Ifonlyiweretaller · 17/08/2019 08:50

@Moomim8. Sorry - I have no idea about whether they're suitable when pregnant ( didn't even know that was a thing!). It's been 30 years since I had my children

Biancadelrioisback · 17/08/2019 09:00

What about a really nice smelling house plant? Will that work? Like a mini citrus tree?

OP posts:
TheClitterati · 17/08/2019 09:18

Check with other people if they can smell your home. You're using a lot of smelly stuff already.

Sarah @ 4160 Tuesday's (perfume maker) has told me sometimes we can't smell scents our brains are very familiar with. The scent is there, but we can't smell it. Others can.
