How to have a nice smelling house?

My house smells like nothing. I'm sure it will have a smell (all houses do) but I just want it to smell nice.
I have tried candles (hate having them lit though) and reed diffusers, I have a plug in in now and it all still smells like nothing.

What do you use?

I burn essential oils and also put a few neat drops of bergamot or lavender into the new hoover bag when I'm changing it. The lovely smell doesn't last half long enough though ☹️

timshelthechoice · 16/08/2019 22:28

Green tea incense, it's the biz.

Maybe I need some really nice smelling, low maintenance house plants? Currently I just have leafy things as DS tried to colour in one's with flowers after watching Alice in Wonderland

It’s not my favourite because it gives me a headache but I know those airwick plug-in things work wonders

ysmaem · 16/08/2019 22:29

I use candlebelle wax melt every day. Also spray kitchen surfaces, sinks, floors etc with zoflora every day. Also have plug in air fresheners and airwick freshmatic

Redland12 · 16/08/2019 22:29

Definitely Zoflora, a few drops in the sink then boiling water, perfect, I pop a few drops in compost bin too. After cleaning bathroom I put some on a clean cloth and wipe over tiles and under sink and toilet, leaves the bathroom smelling fabulous. Jo Molone candle, pomegranate noir,

clean bedding
clean soft furnishings
air regularly
don't cook smelly food

BIWI · 16/08/2019 22:30

Houses don't need fragrances. If it smells of 'nothing' then it's fine!

I hate all these over-fragranced places. And I'm sure it contributes to respiratory problems

merlotqueen · 16/08/2019 22:31

I need to know about the Zoflora!

clucky3 · 16/08/2019 22:34

I tend to pour a bit of washing powder on the floor and hoover it up before I do the rest of the house. Makes it smell lovely. I'm not a fan of air fresheners or candles, they feel too artificial for me.

Horehound · 16/08/2019 22:34

People are using far too many chemicals here. Carcinogenic galore. Confused

Just air your house, that's all it needs

Biancadelrioisback · 16/08/2019 22:34

Zoflora is basically scented disinfectant. It's about £1.50 in wilkos for a small bottle.

Wilmalovescake · 16/08/2019 22:36

Zoflora in a spray bottle.
Steam mop hard floors with it too.
Wash sofa cushions or throws with fabric conditioner.

Biancadelrioisback · 16/08/2019 22:36

It's not about what the house needs.
I want it to smell nice and welcoming when I get home, like my parents house always did.

I agree with @BIWI! Just open the windows!

Biancadelrioisback · 16/08/2019 22:37

I already use zoflora on pretty much everything. As I've said, the smell is gone after a few mins

OP posts:
Biancadelrioisback · 16/08/2019 22:37

I already do open the windows!

BIWI · 16/08/2019 22:38

... in which case you are fine!

BIWI · 16/08/2019 22:39

If you're smelling something 'active' (can't think of a better word) then this means you're breathing in gas particles. Why would you need to do that?

Lonelykettleshed · 16/08/2019 22:39

Today my house smells of actual sh*t as someone has been muck spraying in the fields opposite the house. Generally though I rely on fresh air and the odd diffuser. As with perfume, I think that you stop smelling things in your house after a few days though.

Vasya · 16/08/2019 22:39

I like oil burners myself, with real essential oils.

Biancadelrioisback · 16/08/2019 22:41

I don't need to do that, I want to. Just like all those people who like to wear perfume, scented soap, deodorant etc.

My house smells of nothing too OP despite living in a pristine home, I do all the things everyone had mentioned but it still smells of nothing, I don’t want it to smell of nothing! The only thing that gave my house a distinctive smell recently was my new leather chesterfields, the leather smell was utterly divine, lasted a few months as well, sadly the smell has nearly gone now.

Biancadelrioisback · 16/08/2019 22:48

Ah Betty at least I'm not alone!
Although my house isn't pristine, it's pretty darn clean.
Oooo but leather smell is amazing!! I want a leather smelling house....

If you want to smell your house you need to change the fragrance regularly. You get used to smells.

I just want my house to stop smelling stale ☹️
