Network Rail Ad

Is anyone else getting the Network Rail sidebar ad that's saying that there may be delays if you are traveling over the Bank Holiday, because they are doing work on the lines then, to avoid having to cause problems at busy times'.?

And wondering when could be busier than an August Bank Holiday?

The rail companies do collect information about passenger numbers each day, and have done for many years, so they will be able to predict, with a fair degree of accuracy, when the heaviest and lightest usage of the network will be, so I would guess that, for many lines, peak usage is by commuters, during the working week, so Bank Holidays will be quieter.

I accept that this doesn't help people who want to travel on Bank Holidays, but the work has to be done sometime, and you need to be able to have possession of the segment of line for long enough to complete the work - some of it can be done in one night, so you can cause much less disruption, but other work needs longer than this, and you have to allow for a long enough possession.

Ah right. I'd guessed that they must know it's a lighter travel day, but I just can't see how it can be - presumably everyone is travelling by road? I know it gets extremely busy round here, in fact locals don't go out much on a BH weekend, because the places get so busy.

Mind you, I bet there will be roadworks too...

Kings cross is closed

Euston has been closed on nearly every bank holiday this year for essential maintenance work. The question is when else can the really do it? Weekdays would cause chaos for commuters. Weekends are busy too. They give plenty of notice for the bank holiday work and suggest alternatives. Euston is in dire need of an upgrade.
