Anywhere near Wolverhampton or Shrewsbury?

Posting in here for traffic. I'm looking for decent lunch (pub is fine) where relatively well-behaved children are acceptable within minutes (and I mean minutes) of the M54/A5 tomorrow.

Any ideas? I don't want to drive into the centre of a big town/city and faff about trying to find parking so in Shrewsbury or Wolverhampton themsleves is out. Some little village with a decent pub would be ideal. This is a stop off on the way to somewhere else, and I'm trying to avoid services.

Thank you!

PS: I have googled and tripadvisored but am not getting anything. We stopped at Northycote Farm last year which was good, but would rather not do it again.

Brewood is lovely and situated between the M54 and the A5. For pub food try the Staffordshire Grill, or there's The Mess which is more bistro / tearoom, both in the centre of the village. A 2 minute walk away is Lazy Days tearoom which is also highly rated. All are child friendly

HolyheadBound · 15/08/2019 09:55

Thanks @sarah12398, that's precisely the kind of advice I was after. I knew the hive mind would help me out!

If the kids need to burn some energy there's also a well equipped park, or a walk along the canal! Wink

MagicKingdom17 · 15/08/2019 10:21

The Fox in Chetwynd Aston.
The Oakley Arms in Brewood.

Both of the above are lovely country pubs with lots of garden & space for stretching legs! Oakley also has a lovely mini lake.

The Corbet Arms in Uffington.
The Bell at Tong.
Both really close to M54 & A5.

We stopped at Northycote Farm last year which was good, but would rather not do it again.

That's round the corner from me.

If you come off at Junction 2 you will see a sign for a Premier Inn and/ot 'Wolverhampton business park', next door is a beefeater.

You can see the premier inn from the roundabout

lisbonholiday · 15/08/2019 10:47

Any of the Brunning and Price pubs in area would be ideal e.g.:

The Fox in Chetwynd Aston.
The Oakley Arms in Brewood.

As mentioned. Also see Woodbridge Inn in Coalport which is V close to the M54.

They are 'pubs' but quite naice with a great menu (not just sandwich and chips)

HolyheadBound · 15/08/2019 12:06

Thanks folks! This is brilliant - will definitely pick one of these and bank the others for future use. East London to Holyhead is a heck of a schlepp and it’s great to have a good place to stop. We love a run around and some fresh air but given the forecast for tomorrow, somewhere civilised to
Stop and eat for a decent break is looming essential.

@sashh Northycote was perfect last year. You live in a nice part of the world! What’s Molesley Old Hall like do you know? We’re NT members so were thinking about it. Is the café there any good?

@lisbonholiday, I've booked us a table at The Oakley Arms. Looks like exactly what we're after and they seem to have parking which will make DH happy as he's not keen on leaving a full car away from where we are.

If you're there for lunch and see a vaguely harrassed woman looking longingly at the wine list, which she can't enjoy as phase 2 of the drive will be her responsibility, that'll be me!

LOL, I live on a council estate with quite a reputation. I've never been to Mosley old hall, I don't have NT membership. It looks good from the outside.

There is a nice little independent cafe that makes its own cakes near, but it is a few turns away from the motorway, it's called KTea's. If you go to the roundabout just outside Northycote farm and turn right onto Bushbury Lane you will pass the cemetery on the left, then take the second right on to Hellier Rd and follow the road until you see a group of shops on your left, they are in a sort of curve, park up and you will see it.

www.facebook.com/KTeasTearoomCakes/

If you follow the instructions to get to the tea room but turn tight at the shops you come to a nice park if you want a run around.

NotExactlyHappyToHelp · 15/08/2019 14:36

Mosley Old Hall is really nice. It’s not huge so could be round the house in 45 minutes.

The tearoom is lovely but it’s not cheap. You’d have better value for money at a pub.

Waves to my fellow Shropshire people! We’re a bit of a forgotten county so it’s a thrill to see people recommending places I know.

It's up the road from me Grin Small world.

Knackerelli · 15/08/2019 16:07

I love The Oakley! And yes, Brewood has a great park for the kids to run off their energy. Safe travels and enjoy your meal!

HolyheadBound · 15/08/2019 18:27

Grin still think it’s a nice part of the world @sashh and everyone was really friendly!

Thanks for all the recommendations folks! Sounds like there’s enough of you for a Shropshire meet up. I’ll let you know when we’re on our way up again next year!

Just to let you know the A5 between Gailey island and the A41 island has been closed all week.

TheZeppo · 15/08/2019 18:35

Ohhh I live near Northycote farm too! Wonder if we all went to school together 🤣

BlackNoir · 15/08/2019 18:51

waves to neighbours

HolyheadBound · 15/08/2019 18:54

@lurker75 thanks - that explains why google maps is pushing the route back down onto the M54. We’ll do that - thanks for you help.

DH says thanks to all of you too. He thinks your fab!

lurker75 · 15/08/2019 18:56

No problem it's been a right pain all week! Didn't want you to plan that route and get stuck at the last minute. It's easy to plan around.

Mummyh2016 · 15/08/2019 19:02

Maybe the Shrewsbury Arms at Albrighton or Spread Eagle at Gailey.

gingajewel · 15/08/2019 19:48

Hahaah I’m up the road from northycote too!!! Small world!
I was going to say the fox and anchor next to the three hammers golf club or the spread eagle at gailey.

IgnoranceIsStrength · 15/08/2019 19:51

Just jumping on to say I'm near there too. Good choice in Oakley

ajandjjmum · 15/08/2019 20:07

I had lunch at the Shrewsbury Arms yesterday! Like the Oakley in Brewood too. Lots of Shropshire Mners then - including those of us who edge over the border! Grin
