Balls banging around in the dryer

Dryer balls that is.
Are they supposed to make so much noise or am I doing something wrong?

The plastic ones make a hell of a clatter, and they eventually disintegrate. I use felted wool balls now and they are much quieter.

Only came on to see if your dh was stuck in a household appliance.....

But no, just plastic balls with knobs on. They seem to just bash on the sides of the drum, wondered if I should stick them inside the washing. I don't remember them being this loud before when I used them.
