Do you feel uncomfortable in some shops?

Killing time yesterday with DS and we were wandering through some car dealerships. Ford, Volkswagen, briefly in the BMW garage (they were all next to each other).

But we didn't go in the Jaguar one. It seemed off putting and not the kind of place to casually stroll through looking at the cars and making comments...about the price. I think we would have been really out of place.

I was thinking about that scene from Pretty Women.."All that commission".

Do you ever feel out of place or uncomfortable in some shops and just don't go in?

I would suggest they need mochi flavoured biscuits too. I don't feel uncomfortable around people. Ever. Not in any shops either. If they offer help and I don't want anything I say so but I might still chat with them about something if they have nothing else to do.
Offering tea is just kind. You are not obligated to purchase anything. You can pass kindness further on at another time.

I went into Mac ( it is not a shop I ever go into , I won't buy anything there but my DD friend wanted something so I said I'd look)

Usually it is full of browsers, usually teenage or young 20s .
This time it was empty.
3-4 staff

Suited man near door .
I went in, looked at brushes .
I got no help. I tried to attract attention. I was ignored . I could've stripped naked and still not got arrested .
I am in my 50s with disposable income .

A "Can I help you with anything " would've been nice .

I left empty handed .

Flannels is just Sports Direct pretending to be posh.

I wouldn't be suprsed it I learned that Mac host teen birthday parties. Actually pleased that I can boldly walk by, unaccosted.

I feel uncomfortable in small shops because I’m very slow shopper who hate attention and careful about money. I also can’t focus on shopping when someone’s hovering over me.
I’m genuinely surprised that people get too much attention in Gap and Boots. Sometimes you could fall asleep in our local one waiting for a shop-assistant. It’s bliss.
Can’t go even near Lush because of smell.

WhoReallyCares · 17/08/2019 07:40

Another Lush. Just fuck off and leave me alone!

The last time I went into Molton Brown, I was approached 5 times before I gave up and left.

I'm not bothered by a 'can I help you?' but the questions they are are designed to start a conversation so it's just so annoying, 'what are you looking for today?' 'what are you looking at?' etc. I just buy online now.

I know the staff are told what to do and what to say, but the Edinburgh branch is so small they should have been able to see that I didn't need another approach 30 seconds after the last one!

I hate Superdry because the shop lighting is so dark and the vibe is über cool. I feel very out of place.

It's funny how Superdry think they are so cool and pitch themselves like that. The brand says "Middle aged dad" to me as always who I see wearing their coats.

I visited London last week and we went to Harrods. Took the kids to the designer section and in Dolce & Gabbana an assistant followed me do i turned the tables and asked him “can i help you?” His face was a bit 🤨 and he said “please let me know if i can be of assistance “😂

I also passed the entrance of Gucci and the Croydon Facelift girl starred at me. So i just starred back. She kept looking through the windows! Bitch.

SnuggyBuggy · 17/08/2019 08:26

@ALittleBitAlexis, I'd hate that, a polite can I help you is one thing but I don't think I'd return after that Grin

SheChoseDown · 17/08/2019 08:49

Body shop are irritating fuckers. Say no to everything! Or you're in for a hardcore 30 min sales speech about their VIP card or some such shite. You can't even butt in to tell them no once they've started.
I work in a supermarket, I say hello and engage with people because I want to and its a very sociable job. Also I can give free shit to people so its worth talking to me 😂

I’m made to feel uncomfortable when I visit a long-established haberdashery (!) shop in my town.
Was it Fabric Land? The service in that shop is so unbelieveably rude it's almost comedic.

Mrsjayy · 17/08/2019 10:19

Aww no i felt fine in Harrods im sure they are used to tourists we did get a look from an older couple in the food hall they knew 😀

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 17/08/2019 10:38

Body shop staff are lovely near me! One assistant even gave me a load of some really lovely samples when we were chatting and I told him that I’d had a really terrible day.

HandsOffMyRights · 17/08/2019 10:59

Shops that ask for my email address so they can email my receipt.

Also, I'm not well turned out, but these days buy more expensive/better quality goods than when I was younger and will certainly invest in certain items. However, if I go in an expensive shop I can see assistants assuming I can't afford whatever it is they're selling.

Recently a member of sales staff at a Nissan garage was very dismissive. I was a cash buyer (I don't think he believed me. He even said "come back in with your husband!" so I ended up buying from a different brand dealership. With my own money, shock horror, not DH's....

NormaLouiseBates · 17/08/2019 11:07

@SanJuniperokelly was that Rituals by any chance? I was pounced on in there with the same and I was too polite to say no so I took it. It was disgusting so I was looking around for somewhere to put the cup down discreetly... wasn't quite paying attention and ended up spilling it all over the floor!

SanJuniperokelly · 17/08/2019 11:24

Yes it was rituals! Bloody awful place!
