Locking back door

katystar · 13/08/2019 15:33

I lock my back door and leave the key in but you can still open the door if you have a key from the outside. Any quick fixes I can do to stop this..yes I know change the locks but that isn’t an option currently. Anyone have any advice I’m probably being thick but google isn’t helping thanks

Fit a bolt?

HappyHammy · 13/08/2019 15:36

Can you fix a bolt or two to the door from the inside or at least a chain

SconeofDestiny · 13/08/2019 15:44

please just fit a new lock and take your key out when you're at home.
Do you live in an area with a high crime rate, so that's why you leave the key in the door?
My mum left her key in the door and suffered a massive stroke. She died because no-one could get to her within a reasonable period of time. An ambulance was called but unfortunately, they delayed calling the fire brigade. It was a few hours from having the stroke to getting rescued.

You could fit a standard slide lock which you would only need to screw on both sides.
If you want something a bit more secure but still easy to fit something like this might be more suitable.
It screws to you door and you drill a hole on the side for the 'push lock' bit to go into.
Works on pvc or wood.

Bolt at top.

katystar · 13/08/2019 16:05

I plan to get a bolt tomorrow just concerned about tonight. “D”H has left but is threatening to come back and I’ve just remembered that he has the back door key and it can be unlocked even with the key in. I honestly can’t do anything today. Any other way to jam the lock? I’m happy to change the lock tomorrow but need a quick fix. Thanks for all the advice so far

I’ve locked the back gate but wouldn’t put it past him to climb over. And yes I will call the police but obviously the time it will take them to get here isn’t quick

Wedge a chair under the door?

cookiemonster3 · 13/08/2019 16:12

Oh and call the police to report the threats. They could help with the lock replacement too.

katystar · 13/08/2019 16:15

Can’t wedge a chair but have 2 positioned behind the door to create a wedge if that makes sense but he will still be able to open the door a couple of inches. Probably just being paranoid but best to be safe

I was the same when my ex husband and his family starting threatening stuff. I bought 2 chains for my doors but mine and my kids safety came first so I didn't take the risk. I also reported to the police and they took him in for interview and cautioned him and his family.

katystar · 13/08/2019 16:28

I will call the police if he turns up and can get chains fitted tomorrow but I’m being really paranoid. I’m just so tired of fighting every step of the way.

If you have a spare piece of wood and the door opens inwards, you could screw it to the door frame, barring the door?

adaline · 13/08/2019 16:30

Can you barricade the door with some heavy furniture just for tonight? Or bolt some wood across the door (above and below the handle) so it can't be opened?

Please report his threats to the police if you feel upto it. I hope you're okay Flowers

Babdoc · 13/08/2019 16:33

Could you go and stay at a friend or relative’s house tonight OP, then fix the door tomorrow?

katystar · 13/08/2019 22:29

He got in and I left the house. Will sort new locks in the morning have logged it with the police hopefully tomorrow will be better. Thank you

Put glue or wire or something in the outside lock...
