Any tips for using hair chalks, without making a mess?

Last time we used hair chalks, we damped dd2's hair using a spray bottle & water but it was sort of drippy and made a bit of a mess.

I wondered if anyone has any tips for making less of a mess? Would hairspray work better maybe?

Wet the actual hair chalk, your hands will be messy but nothing else

We tried out coloured hair sprays but one of my nozzels has a blockage now
