Is it cold in Cornwall atm?

Off to Newquay for our holiday on Thursday, and it appears to be forecast to rain pretty much constantly. Sad

I really feel the cold, and it makes me miserable, so I need to make sure I take appropriate clothing and don't spoil everyone's fun by being a grumpy cow.

Anyone there atm able to tell me whether a rain coat and layers under it will be sufficient, or do I need to take my insulated winter parker?

TL:DR - is just wet in Cornwall right now, or wet and cold?

Oh, and I know the weather forecast also gives temperatures, btw! Smile But having grown up on the (NE) coast, I'm also aware the wind off the sea can make it feel a lot colder than the temperature claims it is.

Hi, we live near Falmouth, it’s not too bad. Wet atm but still muggy. I’ve never been so
Cold as when I’ve been up north so I expect you’ll be fine if you’ve got standard layers and waterproof outers! Smile

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 10/08/2019 09:36

Thank you! I lived in Devon for 5 years so can cope with muggy mizzle, but I can't bear being cold - there's a reason I moved away from the NE as soon as I could!

It's not cold where I am about 30mins from Newquay just very grey

IScreamForIceCreams · 10/08/2019 09:38

It's fine, just very windy and wet on and off. Shorts and rainjacket today :-). Yesterday it was quite muggy.

TwattingDog · 10/08/2019 09:42

I live on the south coast. Its actually quite warm. The wind at the moment is crap but it will be gone soon.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 10/08/2019 09:50

Goodoh! Feeling a bit more positive now, thanks!

In the past few days its been wet and a bit windy, but I was only cold once.

If you are booked anyway, bring a smile and positive outlook as I think most of the UK is miserable. Maybe spend some time planning what you can do in your area thats weather friendly.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 10/08/2019 10:03

Will do my best Kez200, but I have to admit I only do UK holidays under duress! I wanted to go to Greece...

However, I have been looking into non-weather dependant activities - think we'll do the Eden Project, the aquarium and the steam train in Bodmin. And the hotel we've booked is supposed to be fantastic for families, so the DC should at least have fun, and that's half the battle.

It's not cold at all. Even the wind isn't too cold.

underneaththeash · 10/08/2019 10:04

The forecast changes frequently. We’ve just been down there and rain was forecast most days. We had 1 afternoon of rain and one short period of drizzle in a week. Temperatures were between 18-23deg.

Picklypickles · 10/08/2019 10:08

Certainly wet but still quite warm!

Greggers2017 · 10/08/2019 10:37

We were down there last week. We camped and we were all warm enough at night just with pjs and sleeping bags. During the day we only put on hoodies in the evening and thin raincoats for the showers. I usually feel cold too but I was fine.

hmwhatsmynameagain · 10/08/2019 10:45

Take a hoody, there is a reason people always come home from Newquay with a Newquay Lifeguard hoody

Oblomov19 · 10/08/2019 10:51

Haven't they cancelled the Newquay surfing competition? Or is that back on now?
The gales in Dorset are very very bad and we've seen tents and awnings blown away! Today is supposed to be the worst. There are warnings.
Temperature wise it's fine.

Bentley111 · 10/08/2019 10:53

We live 25 mins from Newquay - has been a bit wet but certainly not cold. Have a lovely holiday OP Wine

littlepeaegg · 10/08/2019 10:58

I'm in Newquay now and it's so muggy!

Kez200 · 10/08/2019 11:04

They cancelled the music festival that runs alongside the surfing weekend. I thought the surfing was still going ahead but Im not local so dont know if thats been cancelled too.

WutheringBites · 10/08/2019 11:05

I’m near Plymouth, just a few miles from the Cornwall border; I’d say it’s weather for layers (I’ll go out today with a cardi) and you’ll definitely want a light rain coat.
But it’s not cold. Big coat weather down here is more or less Nov-Feb.
Well. Unless you’re camping. Then it’s all cold/hot. Which is part of why I don’t do camping 😊

Dowser · 10/08/2019 11:16

And I thought it was bad in N Yorks
Caravan heating on
But it will be going off soon
Just grey and windy here
I always think the south is warmer

womblessofwimbledon · 10/08/2019 11:23

Just been in north Devon - warm enough for shorts and sea swimming.

Kernowgal · 10/08/2019 11:46

I'm near Newquay and it's muggy and quite warm.

The weather is very localised down here - it can be sunny on the north coast and raining on the south, and vice versa, and it's rarely the same way for long.

Are you staying at Bedruthan Steps hotel?

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 10/08/2019 12:28

No, Sands Resort Hotel?

Ah nice, really close to Porth beach. Good coffee at Roo’s Beach :)

carlywurly · 10/08/2019 13:45

I've been out in a t shirt this morning and was fine. It's just blowy and unpredictable. It doesn't often rain constantly, just enough to spoil plans. August is awful in Cornwall.

Sat and sun usually quietest days for Eden, by the way. Avoid a wet Tuesday at all costs.
