Why is Despicable Me called that?

It might be obvious but I can't work it out. Why didn't they just call it the Minions Movie (as it's called in my house)?

I don't know, but remember reading somewhere it was initially called Evil Me.

I love the original one, though, it's so funny.

Comedy dramatic word for bad guy on whom the film is focussed.

But there is also a Minions movie

It's not about the minions though is it?! It's about Gru who is a despicable villan. The minions are just annoying side kicks who got too big for their boots. Like snoopy.

Because Gru is a bad guy, mainly.

I’m not sure. I always think of the old Smiths song:

Despicable me
Despicable me
Despicable me
I started something
And now I’m not so sure...

But I don’t know if it’s completely irrelevant to the movie.

Grue is despicable me. There is a song about despicable me as he is introduced. The first movie shows how he became the minions' new idol.
