Yes beef is supposed to go brown, the only reason it stays bright red is because they put special gas into the packaging to keep it more attractive looking. I'll bet it is fine but if it smells unappetising don't use it incase it was stored badly.

taken from an older thread on the same topic x

I wouldn't risk it. You don't know whether it's been stored badly. Can you nip out for some more?

Timeandtune · 09/08/2019 17:33

Thanks very much. As far as I can tell the packaging is undamaged . I am not usually bothered about dates etc but this mince really does smell ( not my imagination) . Off to implement plan B. Fishfingers.

I wouldn't, not if it smells funny.

Aquamarine1029 · 09/08/2019 17:34

That meat looks bad, and if it smells off, it definitely is. I wouldn't even consider eating that.

Timeandtune · 09/08/2019 17:34

Reluctant to nip out owing to torrential rain in Glasgow. Have been soaked once already today. Fortunately P2B is 19 so no real worries about feeding him . Just annoyed with myself!

Meat is supposed to be brown, not red! It's just the oxidisation of the blood, there's absolutely nothing wrong with it!!!!!!

Xmasfairy86 · 09/08/2019 17:35

Looks fine. If it smells though, I’d hesitate and probably cook it anyway

Hotterthanahotthing · 09/08/2019 17:37

Brown is not a problem.Does it smell if you take it out of the pack?

Linseedlill · 09/08/2019 17:37

If it smells off, don't risk it!

Timeandtune · 09/08/2019 17:39

Yes it definitely smells when out of the packaging. It’s a sort of grey/ brown colour.

If it was just the colour I'd go with it. But funny smell too then that's a no. Trust your nose not the date for meat!

userxx · 09/08/2019 17:57

@TooMinty My mum taught me this. It breaks my heart watching friends throw away perfectly good food because it's a day past the sell by date.

bouncingraindrops · 09/08/2019 18:18

It's a no from me I'm afraid.

TooMinty · 09/08/2019 18:34

Yes @userxx - I don't take the dates as gospel, I use my nose or test eggs to see if they float. Yoghurt lasts a good fortnight after the date on the tub 🙂

In a postscript I made a dash to Asda during a break in the rain and bought some emergencies mince. It smelled absolutely fine and when I compared it to the previous mince that was definitely off. DS2 enjoyed his dinner. Thanks everyone.

Good news OP. You are less lazy than me, I'd have ordered take away 😂
