Recommend me a Greek Island/hotel

For me and 9yr old ds.

We’ve done Corfu and Kos.

Small family run hotel preferred with biggish pool, beach front preferred but not essential. Self catering a must.

Max ten minute walk into village or town with selection of restaurants/small bars. Safety is biggest issue, so somewhere you’d be happy to walk around with a child on your own.

Flights from Newcastle ideally- but limits number of islands available so could do others if it’s a gem of a place.

For ten nights next summer. Any suggestions??

Skiathos definitely, and there's a big pick of hotels. I have always felt safe there, and it's so small that you can travel across it very easily.

If you've done Corfu and Kos then next destination has to be Kefalonia

Raera · 06/08/2019 20:45

We've only done villas not apartments but have a look at either Rethymnon or Georgoplis (spelling!) in western Crete.
If you can fly to Chania instead of Heraklion it's a much nicer airport and closer to those places

Thank you, Skiathos looks fab but only flights once a week from Newcastle. Not ruling out just yet.

Looking at Crete now but seems more expensive than Skiathos

Rethymnon is amazing. We flew from Newcastle to Heraklion then had a 2 hour transfer. It's an absolutely beautiful and bustling city with a beach and lots of historical sights nearby. We stayed right in the city centre at Hotel Ideon and it was fab. The Rethymnon Suites also looked incredible.

Gouves in Crete is lovey. It's small, not too far from the airport for transfers and there are nice bars and restaurants. Gouves Waterlpark Holiday Resort is worth a look.

Both Skiathos and Kefalonia looking beautiful. So does Crete but the packages are so much more than the others which is a shame as could do ten days.
A great thing about Corfu was the low cost of meals and drinks when there- is this the same on the other islands?

Skiathos, flights from Newcastle on Fridays. My farm ly had to re-fuel on the way home last Friday, bit of a pita if you aren't keen on take off/landing. Maybe fly back to Manchester on Sunday.

Trulos Beach is nice to stay at but you'd need to get the bus (every 15 minutes) to get into town. There are 19 taxis on the island but as it’s only 12 miles long, they are usually available.

If you want to be 10 minutes walk into town, stay at the Oasis (Mike's, available through Thompson only) a medium size complex of rooms like a hotel, small pool, limited bar food. You pass the Spar and a nice fruit shop to get back from town.

Skiathos town is safe, buzzing til 2am, tons of child friendly bars and restaurants. To access beaches if you stay near town, you'd need to use the bus or jump on a boat to get to kanapista/Koukanarries (sp?) beach. Feel free to message me, I just got back from there.

Average meal in Skiathos was about 9€. Boat from the Old Port to Kanapista beach was 4€ per adult, 2€ per child. Large Mithos (local beer) is 2€50 in the Old Port House bar (Run by English couple), squash for kids in there is free.
