School trousers to fit a sticky out toddler belly?

My 4 year old DS starts school in September, and I'm struggling to find uniform trousers to fit him. He's still got a toddler belly and the crotch looks really weird on proper trousers.

He wears joggers most of the time with the waistband under his belly but school trousers don't seem to work on him and I can't roll them down at the waist either. Has anyone else had a similarly shaped kid and could suggest brands or styles that might work better?

I found Matalan do a half elastic waist version with a flat front version. They also do a version with a clasp at the front however my DC, similar shape to your description, found the former most comfortable.

Look for "generous fit" styles. Sturdy Kids website stocks clothes for this shape but I found the quality and fit of the school trousers variable. Order a few and you might strike gold! I always really liked their jeans, though. Great fit and wore well and as your DS gets older he may want a pair of jeans as a change to the joggers.

Thank you I'll try those out later this week.

Does anywhere do "sturdy" sizes in store? I can't afford to buy loads to try and return, and the rest of him isn't very big so I'm not sure how well they'd work.

You can look but they tend to be on the websites rather than in store. Which is annoying as not all boys are skinny!

Why do toddlers get this?! It's so weird! Sorry OP no help but I know exactly what you mean, DS was skinny else where but had his belly at 4 ish still (gone now at 5, flat as a pancake!)

Oh and M&S do plus size I think??

Asda online are good for various fits from skinny to sturdy and they are cheap too. Some of their larger or clothes only stores may have them in stock if you want to try.
DS is skinny as a rake but his best friend definitely sturdy and they both manage to get Asda trousers to fit

I think a very low rise at the front is what's needed, the fly area just seems massive when the waistband can't go at waist height but needs to go "under bump" like maternity leggings Grin

He's a little small for his age everywhere else so might be a bit swamped by bigger stuff, but I'll try. We've got a Matalan and a M&S, I just need chocolate buttons to bribe the poor kid to change his trousers in a shop a few more times.
