Beloved was one of the transformative reads of my life.

Flowers

She thought her fingernails could open locks the rain had rained on.

Probably a slight misquotation but that sentence made me really sob.

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 06/08/2019 16:36

No, it was

What made her think her fingernails could open locks the rain rained
on?

Pillowcased · 06/08/2019 16:43

Oh, lord, I thought of her as entirely ageless and unkillable. RIP an astonishing writer.

OfMe · 06/08/2019 16:50

Yes, very sad. A massive loss to the world.

MattMagnolia · 06/08/2019 17:57

America’s greatest writer.
And I bet Donald Trump has never read a word she wrote.

thatone · 06/08/2019 18:21

So sad to read this, she changed the way I thought about the world.

TattiePants · 06/08/2019 18:57

Very sad. I was wondering what to read next. I’ve had a copy of Beloved on my shelf for ages so think it’s about time I read it.

EndLegalFiction · 07/08/2019 01:23

An incredible woman. Beloved changed me.

Read Sula next. Better yet borrow/download the audiobook from your local library - read by Toni herself and her voice is a wool blanket pulling you in rocking chair close whilst your hair stands on end.

PerkingFaintly · 07/08/2019 09:36

Oh yes, EndLegalFiction, that's so well put.

You feel her love for you, even while she pulls you in to a warm, dark room wherein are displayed the terrible, broken places of the soul.

I remember exactly where I was when I read Beloved- probably 20 years ago now. As someone said above, a book that changed how I saw the world. What a brilliant woman!

anothernotherone · 07/08/2019 09:57

Yep, Beloved is definitely a life changing, unforgettable book. Disturbing in the right way.

She was 88, I agree she was ageless in many ways. 88 is a good age I think.

Agree Trump certainly never read Beloved, he wouldn't be able to be the person he is if he had.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 07/08/2019 10:01

Her fiction kept me going through a difficult time in my late teens.
It's so beautiful.
Playing in the Dark transformed how I interpret literature too.
Amazing woman. Rest in power.
