Any Council Tax experts about?

Riviting I know...

I'm moving out of my house soon to go and be a full time student on the otherside of the country.

The house will be empty but when I go on my local councils website it says it no longer offers reduced council tax for empty properties. But seeing as I own the house but will be a student, Im not sure if my exemption will kick in?

Alternatively, I dont know whether to call this my second home instead. Gov.uk suggests a 50% discount for second homes but I cant see this on my local councils website. The house will remain largely furnished and we will probably use it during school hols so its probably a reasonable discription.

I know the best thing to do is ask my council, but I'm scared they will choose the option that best suits them rather than help me. I'm going to be living so close to the breadline as it is keeping this sodding house and I just want to try and get some breathing space somewhere.

Any advice?

You can't claim a student exemption on your own home as you won't be residing there. Wether you can class it as a second home will depend on your councils own rules regarding this. For my council it's only a 10% discount for second home even if you were eligible.
