Can somebody explain feed in tariffs for me? Solar panels

Excuse my ignorance on this subject.

I bought my house with solar PV panels already installed. They aren’t leased so we own them outright now.

The previous owner had his FIT tariff through Utility Warehouse and regular usage via EDF so we’ve carried on in the same way as it was painful enough getting registered as the owners for the FIT that I couldn’t face the extra rigmarole of swapping FIT too.

I just don’t get how the tariff works - I provide one meter reading but the bill is split in to generation and export. I get about £600/700 a year in payments.

The generation aspect confuses me, would I be better off swapping from UW to EDF for my FIT? Would I use the electricity I’m generating first and pay the difference if there was one.

I know the previous tariff has closed to new participants - are the new ones less favourable?

Apologies for all the questions - energy consumption is gaping hole in my otherwise decent general knowledge! Blush
