What do I engrave?

I’m buying a tankard for my nephew’s 18th. What should I engrave on it?
Happy 18th birthday xxx and the date?

Yes. I think anything would be considered cheesy by an 18 year old.

Oh, and the xxx is meant to be their name and not 3 kisses!

Is it a glass or silver tankard?
I think most 18yr olds would prefer glass as they can use it, a silver one ( I presume) would be more for display.

Interesting. Why wouldn’t they use a silver or pewter one?

Metal tankards may contain lead, which dissolves in the liquid and slowly poisons the drinker. Modern pewter made in the UK is supposedly safe but I wouldn’t risk it. If the pewter isn’t guaranteed to be of UK origin then I definitely wouldn’t drink out of it. Silver is less problematic but it will tarnish and a solid silver tankard would cost a fortune.

I have found that silver or pewter ones taste funny but maybe its just me
