What's your favourite UK seaside town?

Looking for somewhere for a traditional seaside holiday.

I'd like a nice, safe, sandy beach.
Water warm enough to swim (or at least wade) in.
A few shops, cafes, fish and chips and ice cream within walking distance.
Don't really want nightlife, arcades etc.
What's your favourite?

Whitby. Picturesque, charming, beautiful and I feel so relaxed when we are there.

You can get to Fowey from Polruan, there’s a boat to get you across. Well, there was, I haven’t been there for a few years now!

Elie is my favourite but also liked Tenby (although went in Scottish school holidays before english schools broke up so less busy)

Whitby is ok until the evening. I found it full of drinking gangs (stag nights) and a bit intimidating

North Norfolk coast. Our local ish beach is Old Hunstanton...love Wells next the Sea and Sheringham also.

Sidmouth in Devon has all you describe. Lovely place with lots of rock pools as well

Filey, I spent my childhood holidays there & I still love it because it hasn't turned in to a giant amusement park like other seaside towns, it's hardly changed in 50 years.

Polzeath

Tenby, Southwold / Walberswick or Mumbles

Ventnor, Isle of Wight Smile you can visit the Botanical Gardens and take the walk along Steephill Cove to Ventnor beach, lovely! No arcades, just cafes and ice cream stops.

Tyne mouth is lovely and Southsea is great fun if you don't mind pebble beaches.

Northumberland has beautiful beaches but not all are suitable for swimming. Not just because it's cold, there are also very strong currents and I wouldn't swim off Alnmouth for this reason. Bamburgh, Embleton and Warkworth are all lovely, although the last two have a bit of a walk to find other stuff.

Whitstable, Kent.

heytherelonelygirl · 05/08/2019 23:46

Nairn , spent every summer there for eight years - gorgeous place ... or Lossiemouth .

St Ives is beautiful and one of my favourite places, but it is so busy in the summer months. It's best to visit on a Saturday during the summer as it is normally change over day for holidaymakers so places tend to be a tad quieter. You also have to get there pretty early to get parked, there is a big car park right at the top of the hill by the leisure centre which runs a park and ride down into the town. There is also a train that goes right into the town, you can drive to nearby Lelant Saltings park and ride train station to catch it - the route goes right along the coast through Carbis Bay and is amazing!

There are so many other amazing places in South Cornwall too, there's an area called the Lizard, lots of camping, caravans, holiday lets etc and breathtaking scenery! Look up Kynance Cove, pictures of it went viral last year as it looks like somewhere in the Caribbean or something!
Hayle is also lovely. Marazion near Penzance also has everything you mentioned and also has St Michaels Mount, a castle that sits in the sea in the bay, and when the tide is out the bay is so shallow that you can walk across it to the mount to explore! 😍

AnnaFiveTowns · 07/08/2019 09:31

Yes, I used to love st Ives when the kids were very little and we could go out of school holidays as it wasn't quite so busy. It is lovely there, shame about the hoardes of people...

RubbingHimSourly · 07/08/2019 09:33

At bees.

Secret beach, a stone's throw from the lakes and doesn't get mobbed by tourists.

SkelterHelter · 07/08/2019 09:46

Southwold is my favourite. Mentions for Whitby, RHB, Bamburgh (more of a village) and Aldeburgh, although the beach is pebbly there. The whole North Norfolk coast is also glorious. We are lucky to have such a choice of coastal village and towns in in the UK aren't we?

BourbonAndTea · 07/08/2019 09:48

Camber Sands, without a doubt! And the little town of Rye next door is beautiful!
