Quick Question: at what age did you let your kids choose their own decor?

ie duvet cover/type of bed etc

How old were they?
How long did they want to keep it for?
How long did you make them live with it for? Grin

Thanks in advance Flowers

Mine's just chosen most of the interior of his new loft room, aged 12. It was fairly uncontroversial though - he just wanted completely white walls and ceiling, white furniture, blue carpet and blue bedlinen. I can't see him growing out of it for a while, fingers crossed!

Ah thanks for replying.
DD wants patchwork which I find twee and DS wants minecraft which he is obsessed with. I'd want them to live with it for at least 4 years - is that unreasonable (DD is 8, DS is 6). DD bed would have soft pink elements (bit girly) DS bed would have bright green elements (bit in your face).
Bottom line - not my taste but not my room. On the other hand, they will have to live with their choices. What do you reckon?
DD's second choices were pom pom on white duvet or panda.
DS's second choices were Marvel or panda.

(Am aware first world problem but beds and bedding are an investment and I don't want to be changing them any time soon once purchased iyswim as I cannot afford to be chopping and changing but making them get all white/neutral seems churlish).

I have let them have an opinion, but not make the final decision, since they were little.

Can't they have neutral beds and bedding/posters in their themes? I think they will certainly grow out of those themes in less than 4 years.

They could. It's IKEA beds so not mega bucks but it all adds up.

They do these in white/white but if I am paying out anyway then a splash of colour is less sterile, but the green, my eyes!
We do not have tons of space.
That said, a top bunk until you're 12? I had that but it was the 70s...

DD was nearly 5 when she moved Into her new bedroom. We painted the walls but she could choose lamps, curtains, wall stickers and borders. So things which can be changed easily and with not a huge amount of money.

As she only can sleep in 100% cotton the choices of duvet covers were always restricted so we had mostly generic ones anyway, she got blankets and pillows for birthdays and Christmas if she asked for them.

She is now 12 and the room needs a makeover. I think she will have a bigger say apart from wall colour. I refuse to go all purple as I think she has no idea about long lasting effects and I don’t fancy repainting walls every 2 years,

RageAgainstTheVendingMachine · 02/08/2019 21:31

Ah I might just let them have at it...I was surprised at DD's choice as on the Next website there were rainbows, bunny and unicorn pom poms, trees and hearts - patchwork always makes me think of olde worlde country cottages/Laura Ashley/Holly Hobbie! I clearly have tackier taste than my child. I liked the bunting Grin
Minecraft - meh - I just don't want to enable him further but I suppose it's cooler than what I showed him I liked space and was hoping to make the box room into a Tardis

Dd was 6 when she chose her room. We had to choose it together as I didn’t want things that didn’t look right or were abit babyish. Her room is unicorn themed
