Collection isn’t until tues. Dh hasn’t been doublebagging ones he’s put in so he’s in the doghouse. I put fly spray in yest but now coming out of the top! Would boiling water help or do I need to move house?!

Personally I just leave the lid open and the birds soon find them. When the bin is empty chuck a kettle of boiling water in and some bleach and give it a wash out. Maggots are pretty standard this time of year, I can’t bring myself to get worked up about them.

stripeyronnie · 02/08/2019 16:09

Fly spray (eg raid) in liberal quantities is the best thing as it is an insecticide.

GummyGoddess · 02/08/2019 16:12

Does the bin smell or is it just maggots? If no smell you can just scoop them out and chuck them in a bush. Wouldn't if it smells though as wouldn't want to touch whatever is rotting.

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 02/08/2019 16:14

Leave the lid open and let the birds have a nice drive by lunch. Then once the bin is emptied chuck boiling water into it and swill it out afterwards with w hose. Maggots often happen whether you double bag or not so not sure why your DH is in the dog house. Sadly with fortnightly collections maggots are pretty common these days.

CoffeeQueen24 · 02/08/2019 16:15

It’s just that ‘maggot’ smell if that makes sense?! It’s making me feel sick knowing they are near the house might if we could move the bin away from house I might be bother iyswim

We’ve been able to keep maggots at bay through double bagging so far even in the heat wave but Dh has been lazy this time :(

Leave the lid open after collection.

You know they just turn into flies? Don’t mean this in a snippey way, it’s just flies seem less grim.

GummyGoddess · 02/08/2019 16:18

Get dh to scoop them out? Don't vacuum them, they'll hatch and flies will come out of the end according to my dm (she cling filmed the end after my dad vacuumed them).

BrylcreamBeret · 02/08/2019 16:19

I could be worse op. My eejit husband put food waste in a black bag instead of a food waste bag and the maggot situation in our bin became so bad they were on my living room carpet as they'd come in through the back door (left open for dog :)) I was green in the gills that night...

Lindormilk · 02/08/2019 16:25

Yes to the birds feeding.

Out of interest, does your food waste go in with general rubbish? We have a bin for all food waste and gets collected each week. Don’t understand why councils differ. 🤔

fleshmarketclose · 02/08/2019 16:27

Put the bin away from the house leave the lid off the birds will eat the maggots and any that drop will feed a hedgehog. We had loads one year next morning there wasn't a trace because we had half a dozen hedgehogs hoovering them up.

CoffeeQueen24 · 02/08/2019 16:32

We have general waste and recycling only and both are fortnightly:(

Same here and honestly the bin men are used to maggots. There really is no avoiding them and I and many of my neighbours would rather single bag and send less plastic to landfill where possible. Once you leave the lid open they should be gone soon enough the smell cant be as bad as 2 weeks old food in a bag at the bottom of the bin and at least the maggots will be gone before the food waste is collected. I'm trying to look on the positive side. Grin

wheresmyhairytoe · 02/08/2019 16:39

It's hot, maggots will be in the bins.

Just leave the lid open and give the birds a feast.

CoffeeQueen24 · 02/08/2019 16:41

Wish I could be as relaxed as you guys it honestly make me feel queasy :(

Fortnightly for food waste? 😮.

Our recycling and food waste is collected weekly, garden waste every 2 weeks and general household every 3 weeks. So no maggots here, waster is in a sealed waste bix.

Lindormilk · 02/08/2019 16:45

But im used to maggots. Small holding/blowfly strike. Ive got my own bix of latex gloves so ive seen worse than maggots in a bin😖

TheInvestigator · 02/08/2019 16:47

Firstly, atop double bagging. It's such a disgusting waste of plastic and it's not necessary. Maggots happen, especially when it's hot. Get over it.

When the bins are collected, give them a clean out with a hose and a long brush. Do it every time and smells etc don't build up. If you get maggots, just leave the lid open for the birds and wait for the collection. They aren't going to get in your house or cause any problems. They're just flies.

buttertoasty · 02/08/2019 16:50

Put food waste in a plastic bag which you keep in the freezer. Then chuck this in the bin on the collection day.

But its outside and its just some maggots, if you get the lid open they would be gone in about 2 hours. Then once the bin is emptied you can rinse it out properly. The longer you wait the longer they are going to be there.

MothratheMighty · 02/08/2019 17:04

I have a pair of robins and we’ve built up quite a relationship. They wait with excitement for me to tip out the few maggots I get, then pounce!

CoffeeQueen24 · 02/08/2019 17:06

Dh has taped up the bin and moved it away from house

OP posts:
ComeOnGordon · 02/08/2019 17:07

Read the thread from last week! Leave the lid wide open unless it’s raining - the birds eat them

ComeOnGordon · 02/08/2019 17:08

Taping up the bin is just making it worse

CoffeeQueen24 · 02/08/2019 17:11

Why what will happen?!
