Collection isn’t until tues. Dh hasn’t been doublebagging ones he’s put in so he’s in the doghouse. I put fly spray in yest but now coming out of the top! Would boiling water help or do I need to move house?!

Why have you taped the bin??

You'll now have a bin full of flies laying more eggs and hatching more maggots.

Open the lid, the birds will eat them in an hour or so, problem solved.

LemonTreeLemon · 02/08/2019 17:14

Get some Bin Buddy and sprinkle it liberally into your bin. It'll kill the maggots and smells nice too.

TheInvestigator · 02/08/2019 17:18

Omg!! It's like talking to a brick wall. Why are you taping up the bin? You're going to get flies laying more eggs, more maggots then more flies. The bin will end up teeming with them.

Open the bin up!!! Stop double bagging!! Get some sense.

As harsh as this sounds I agree 100% with Theinvestigator. No one on the thread said to tape up the bin, how do you think that will possibly help the problem all it's going to do is contain the maggots!

Heyha · 02/08/2019 17:21

If it's any consolation OP they will soon dry up into cocoon mode then they just look like bits of red rice, no more wriggling or smell.

Jeyes fluid doesn't do them much good but your bin men might not be keen either so save that for after collection.

Heyha · 02/08/2019 17:22

But yes in the short term I agree let the birds at them, there won't be many left by tomorrow lunchtime.

Lozz22 · 02/08/2019 17:42

There's nothing else for it! You're just gonna have to set fire to the bin!!

CoffeeQueen24 · 02/08/2019 17:52

After I’ve bleached the maggots though? Can’t be good for the bird?!

OP posts:
wheresmyhairytoe · 02/08/2019 17:56

Well don't bleach them ffs.

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 02/08/2019 17:58

Why would you bleach it when there is rubbish still in the bin?

Onemorecrisp · 02/08/2019 18:00

Leave the bin open!!!!! Once empty clean. Not that difficult. It happens with less frequent bin collections.

LocksMyth · 02/08/2019 18:01

Jeye's powder. Works everytime.

Lindormilk · 02/08/2019 18:01

There is no bloody need to be so bitchy towards OP.

If you can, take out the rubbish bags, the maggots will fall off the bags, the others will dry out, they thrive in warm moist places. The sun/warmth will dry them and they will eventually perish.

TheInvestigator · 02/08/2019 18:03

OP: What should I do about This?

Mumsnet: Leave the bin open and stop worrying about it.

OP: Thanks guys, we've taped the bin shut.

I think that justifies a response of "WTF!?!"

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 02/08/2019 18:20

Its not bitchy to wonder why the OP started this thread if she wasn't going to follow any of the advice given. Several posters suggested really useful advice for dealing with the issue and the Op has so far ignored all the advice given and poured bleach in the bin and taped the lid shit, neither of which are going to resolve the problem. Hmm

Lindormilk · 02/08/2019 18:24

Your responses are still bitchy. All about your attitude.

ShrodingersRat · 02/08/2019 18:32

You have 2 choices:

  1. Kill the maggots with boiling water / bleach etc, in which case do not let birds get near
  2. Wait t bird feeding time, approaching dusk, and tip maggots out for birds to eat.

If you tape up the bin you will just get a bin buzzing with flies all laying more eggs which hatch into maggots and when you or the bin people open the bin it will be like a horror film. But worse because you will be in it, not watching from behind the TV screen.

wheresmyhairytoe · 02/08/2019 18:52

There's only so many times you can say leave the lid open without getting irritated.

ShrodingersRat · 02/08/2019 18:59

Do birds go into the bottom of a wheely bin?

TheInvestigator · 02/08/2019 19:04

They won't reach the bottom, but the bin is full of bags so pouring bleach onto those won't help either. The maggots will crawl around and birds can eat them up when they appear. Once the bin is empty, that's the time to clean it. OP just needs to leave it alone. It's really not an issue.

MothratheMighty · 02/08/2019 19:06

Well, give it a week in the heat and the OP will bow to the wisdom of MN if she survives the plague of flies she’s cooking up.

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 02/08/2019 19:47

It's the poor bin men I feel sorry for.

MothratheMighty · 02/08/2019 19:55

They won’t empty it if it’s taped shut.

jazzandh · 02/08/2019 19:58

I don't mind maggots although I try my best not to encourage the flies, and appreciate the fact that they are a necessary part of the decomposition process, but god, they really do make the bins stink!!!

I wash my bin out after it has been emptied every fortnight - but after a maggot episode ....it is rough!

MmmBlowholes · 02/08/2019 20:03

Just wait it out until collection. Then hose out your bin or hire someone to clean it out.

It doesn't need to be a crisis. It happened to my bin last summer.
