Phobias - what's yours?

Ilovesweatybollocks · 02/08/2019 14:43

Just wondered if anyone has any unusual phobias?

Mine is glitter, can't stand it anywhere near me so buying birthday cards isn't easy and I have to wear latex gloves to open my birthday and Christmas cards.

I also hate the m word (m*t) and if you don't know what I'm on about it's often used to describe a cake that isn't dry.

This is my first post so you could say I'm a virgin but only on here so be kind if I cock this up Smile

Quite shocked that no one has mentioned this yet, but for me it’s thunder and lightning. I’ve always been absolutely petrified of it. No idea where it stems from.

I can just about deal with it if it’s during the day, but if it’s at nighttime, I have to make DH close all windows/curtains and put all the lights on so I can’t see the flashes. I can feel my heartbeat doing a tonne, I sweat and shake. Thing is I feel so bad as all DCs are going the same way after watching me Blush

Emmabryant123 · 04/08/2019 14:00

Needles and wasps and bees

Atlasta · 04/08/2019 14:06

I have a huge fear of death and certain illnesses.
I also have a fear of fear.
Hence my many hours of cbtGrin

MummBraTheEverLeaking · 04/08/2019 14:14

The usual, spiders. Will tolerate a spindly leg one (like daddy long legs) and money spiders I will actually allow on my hand. House spiders can fuck right off, scuttly bastards.

Snakes, fine. Mice, fine. Rats, fine. If anything I'd rather be afraid of snakes. Chances are you aren't going to be pottering around the house and find a big snake in the bath! I did look at the London Zoo course as I'm going into London for a trip soon but there aren't any courses for that weekend :(

Likethebattle · 04/08/2019 15:47

@MummBraTheEverLeaking i gave a snack phobia, pictures even make me feel faint, there are adverts sometimes with them and it makes me shaky and hot! There are several report of adders up here in Scotland and I am shiting my pants at the thought of ever coming across one of them so it’s not an easy phobia. I also have claustrophobia and a fear of worms. I have come to the come to the conclusion I was cleopatra in a previous life, killed by a snake and then put in a tomb.

Likethebattle · 04/08/2019 15:48

I’m not Scared of spiders though, DH is petrified!

Ellabella989 · 04/08/2019 15:52

@MummBraTheEverLeaking my friend did a spider phobia course at London Zoo and said she’s still scared of them. Not quite as much as she was but she still doesn’t want to be in the room with one.
My spider phobia is off the scale and I will have full blown panic attacks if I see a big house spider running around Blush my DP loves them and would keep them as pets if he could get away with it Angry

@Likethebattle - love the idea of a snack phobia Smile No my DH is really not keen on snakes at all - I would not say it is full on phobia but he really really doesn't like them.

Ha ha - I have a proper phobia ( not just dislike ) of sp-d-rs ) Snakes - as long as not dangerous I rather like them . But I think it's because they have no legs. & Yet a crab or a lobster - not bothered at all about them.

Dry docks and locks - Oh dear me no. Would avoid at all costs. Also heights.

bushes · 05/08/2019 06:25

Underwater machinery.

Like swimming pool drains / wave machines etc. They genuinely terrify me. But I'm weird in that I also spend time researching them online Hmm Maybe to satisfy but morbid fear / curiosity...?! I have recently discovered the submechanophobia sub-reddit and spent several hours browsing it.

For me I think it's the thought of the machinery lurking, unseen, in the water and just DOING STUFF. Urgh.

BasiliskStare · 06/08/2019 03:34

@bushes - do not not not post re swimming pools drains Grin - that's a bit like locks or dry dock - machinery & water - no no no . I will not wear goggles in a swimming pool in case I see the drains. Have never heard of submechanophobia but can believe it is A Thing. One other thing I hate hate the thought of is where they used to test astronauts in a massive tank ( like a gas tank but full of water ) If I ever drive on the M6 ( is it there ? ) I have to close one eye so as to not so see those huge cooling / whatever they are towers - just horrid - close to Birmingham. Oh makes me shudder just thinking about them.

bealright · 06/08/2019 15:13

@BasiliskStare I'm ok with dry docks, perhaps because I can see what's in there. It's the unseen that gives me this shits.

I have also spent a lot of time morbidly researching the world's deepest swimming pools - Nemo 33 and Y-40, in case anyone is interested GrinConfused They are HORRIFIC.

Eek. I stumbled across a visualisation of how deep the Mariana trench is earlier and it was frightening. I'm a good swimmer but hate swimming in open water where I don't know what is beneath me or how deep it is.

bealright · 06/08/2019 19:22

@origamiunicorn I'm off to google that now Grin

wannabebetter · 06/08/2019 20:59

Really big things like huge cruise ships or massive cliffs - I just looked it up and apparently it's called megalaphobia!

Doobigetta · 06/08/2019 21:23

Rats.
And not a phobia, but I have a very, very strong aversion to everything about bananas. Especially the smell. Especially when some filthy, filthy disgusting person eats one at their desk and then leaves the skin to fester for hours Envy

Elliemayclampett · 06/08/2019 21:31

Escalators outs self can’t do them. Terrifying things

Hadenoughofitall441 · 06/08/2019 22:44

Vomiting. The thought of it make me hyperventilate. I can deal with others it’s just the feeling you get when your throwing up I can’t stand. Absolutley hate it. Also have a fear of cockroaches 😩

Bluemascara4 · 06/08/2019 23:01

Swimming pool drains ..... my heart rate has increased just typing that.

Especially the black ones at the deep end

Shudder

I can't swim near / over them at all and once I see one, it clouds my thoughts for the rest of the day

Don't laugh !!

Rooms without windows, lifts and twisty locks 😳. Yes I know that I'm strange
