On my bum I went. Ankle buggered

So I was walking down my Mum's drive in flip flops and it didn't end well....
Thankfully ankle is not broken but my lorrrrrrd it bloody hurts!! Even Liquid Morphine isn't quite cutting it. I've broken an ankle in the past and it wasn't this painful! Swollen to the size of a fist and due to my pre-existing health issues, I cannot use the crutches.

Any tips for pain relief/increasing movement please? Stuck on my Mum's sofa (she has a bungalow - I was offered a bed but sofa seems to be more comfortable foot-wise, oddly enough).

As a single Mum, I need to be back up & running ASAP!

Have got it elevated of course and have tried several forms of Ice/ice packs/frozen peas/wet towels which have been in freezer for 20 mins, Naproxen (with Omeprazole of course to any HCPs reading this), Oramorph and even my Buprenorphine transdermal Patches don't seem to be helping much with the pain. It's so bad I can't even sleep for more than 5 mins at a time. The pain is even in the tips of my toes and behind my heel 😖

I've managed to get it into my boot brace thing which I had leftover from when I broke my ankle. It's helping but nowhere near enough for me to sleep :(

Am I missing something please? Will try (almost) anything!!

Thanks Brew

Don't forget compression of your list

I think this isn’t recommended nowadays.

Sorry about your accident, OP 💐

Did you have an MRI scan to check ligaments ?

I'm in Germany and this is standard - MRI showed I had torn one ligament all the way through and others partly,
i.e. a bad sprain
Massive swelling, pain, couldn't bear weight

http://www.cambridgefootandankle.com/ankle-ligaments.shtml

A bad sprain takes at least 4 weeks, often 8, before you can start running again
Don't try before it is healed, or you'll worsen the injury

My specialist advised completely resting the foot for the first 2 weeks

  • he even did home visits, so I didn't have to use the stairs to go out to see him !

After 10 days, he prescribed a course of lymph massage sessions, to bring down the massive swelling that was still there

He approved as ideal support the A60 ankle splint (as used by Andy Murray) which I had bought

After 2 weeks, or when it has stopped hurting at rest, I gently started some special exercises for sprains:

oh and he also brought me crutches to use for at least the first 2 weeks, as it was important not to put much weight on while the ligaments were starting to knit together
