Sleeper train Yorkshire to Scotland

My 13 yr old has persuaded us to get the sleeper train from Yorkshire to Inverness as his birthday treat. Then he wants to continue to Wick!

Not sure whether to do epic trip from Ness to Wick and back in a day or to just surrender to the whole thing and stay over in John O Groats.

He is really looking forward to it but we are a family of so this could be v pricey.

We will already have had a family holiday so I’m a bit stressed about the idea of trying to do my work on trainers and a terrible waste to go all that way without trying to see the puffins or maybe go to the Cairngorms .....

Any thoughts mumsnet?

First thought is can you get s sleeper train from York/Leeds? Thought it was a london- Scotland service?

I'd love to do it if so, don't fancy the schlep down to London just to come past the end of my street -literally!!

StrongerThanIThought76 · 01/08/2019 21:02

Also, family railcard?

areyoureadytobestrong · 01/08/2019 21:02

...of four....

.....do my work on trains but it seems!.....

Stronger, yes, that is the ticket I’ve bought: Preston to Inverness.you get on at half past midnight and wake up at a civilised hour.

Don't know how to make a clicky link OP but it looks like London to Scotland only Sad

OP Preston is in Lancashire not Yorkshire - shame on you! Wink

areyoureadytobestrong · 01/08/2019 21:07

Sorry! We are in Yorkshire...

I'd be going to Thurso, not Wick OP. Stay over and take the ferry over to Orkney for the day. The Ferry Inn at Scrabster is a nice place to stay and does a great breakfast.

areyoureadytobestrong · 01/08/2019 21:25

Is Thurso nicer than Wick?
Love the idea of Thurso...
I guess they have the internet up there.....don’t they??

Please tell me you are joking about the internet?

Haggisfish · 01/08/2019 21:41

Of course they have the bloody internet!

areyoureadytobestrong · 01/08/2019 21:41

I am :)....

But look, last time I thought about Thurso was 1979 looking at the tantalising Great Game of Britain board.....

If your getting the train from Inverness to Wick/Thurso it would be better to stay the night its a long train journey, 4 hours each way.
And yes caithness has Internet!

areyoureadytobestrong · 01/08/2019 21:45

Thank you.

I’m going to want to go to Orkney now.... this is getting pricier!
