Early pregnancy issues

Hi all,
I am wondering if anyone has had a similar experience.
I found out I was pregnant a couple of weeks ago following a miscarriage in February. I don’t have other children. This time I decided to have an early pregnancy scan yesterday at what should be 6.5 weeks. I had it done privately and the whilst we saw a strong beating heart the sonographer was very concerned about the size, considering my dates. She put me about a week earlier. I know I have my dates correct though!

I went to my nhs appointment today and explained what happened and they sent me to the EPU for another scan. This time the sonographer was positive and said everything looked fine. She had a good look around and found a strong heartbeat. She told me not to worry and come back in two weeks for another one. She also put me at 5 weeks, which would mean I conceived about a week after having sex...?!

Anyway, since I got home I have started to get severe cramps and now bleeding. Can I be miscarrying already after seeing a heartbeat a few hours ago?! It feels like I am! So painful!

I will ring them in the morning but wondering if anyone had any thoughts?

Thanks xx

Hi @Lionmilk - I'm so sorry you're going through this. I'm afraid it's impossible to know for sure what's going on; it's likely that only another scan in a few days will be able to confirm either way.

It's great news that they found a heartbeat - this usually decreases the chance of miscarriage. And I had bleeding too - a few hours of bright red blood that convinced me it was all over at less than six weeks, but it turned out that the baby was fine and I'm 19 weeks now.

All you can do is wait - which I understand is so, so hard. Will be thinking of you 💐

Sorry you are going though this stress.

It is possible that you are miscarrying after seeing a heartbeat, even within hours.

Or
It is possible that the scan has irritated the cervix, and you are just experiencing some bleeding from that.

Or
It is possible that you are getting cramps and bleeding but the pregnancy is fine.

Sorry it is not possible to tell. The only thing you can do is wait and see.

It is hard, the best thing you can do is try to distract yourself, if it helps just say to yourself today I am pregnant and not think about the future. Try not to go over the what-ifs.

Be kind to yourself and wait. Sorry we can't tell you anything to reassure or put your mind at rest.

You couldn’t have conceived as late as a week after having sex but several days is possible. There are slight differences in how quickly embryos develop too.
So as above, no way of knowing for sure at this point. Good luck!

Thank you all for your quick responses and kind words. I guess I will have to wait and see what happens. Fingers crossed!
All very stressful and I am about to go on holiday which doesn't help :(
