Do children still wear vests?

Not in this weather but in winter. My DGCa are pre-schoolers and just wear polo shirt then sweatshirt for school or a tee shirt and sweater out of school. I’m of the age where I was trussed up in a liberty bodice AND a vest under my school shirt. I’ve seen vests in the shops but are they still a ‘thing’?

Well it seems as if the vest isn’t dead. I might invest in a pack for DGC if you’ll pardon the pun.

Mine does, in winter especially. He's very slim and feels the cold - he started wearing vests once he graduated from those little all-in-one things with poppers (like a baby bodysuit), once he was toilet-trained.

MillicentMartha · 01/08/2019 16:12

Mine wore vests up until age 7 or so in the winter but not after that.

Eldest is 7 and she still wears cotton vests from h&m under her uniform between autumn and spring. I think they are great.😀 I shudder when I see teen girls wearing crop tops with open (or no) jackets in the winter.
I have turned into my mother.

DS (8) wears vests in the winter. Probably because he does not wear trousers at all or school jumpers. Even if it's sub-zero outside.

He hasn't had hypothermia yet so it seems to work for him.

MonChatEstMagnifique · 01/08/2019 16:20

Schools always seem to be hot no matter what the weather is, so if the kids put a vest under a polo and jumper, they would be boiling.

Also, people generally keep their houses warmer now so I think vests are just not needed as much.

ATowelAndAPotato · 01/08/2019 16:21

Mine youngest is in year one and wears vests in the winter. She prefers a cardi to a jumper, which she rarely remembers to button and gets chilly otherwise. She will also ask for a vest any time of year if the top she wants to wear is a bit scratchy (e.g if it has sequins sewn on)

Camomila · 01/08/2019 16:22

DS (3) does Autumn - Winter - Spring. Not in mid summer though.

I'm Italian and agree we love a vest - I wear a vest top under my clothes 90% the time.

Thunderpunt · 01/08/2019 16:34

Timeforakinder mine does too - and in deepest winter in the Home Counties he upgrades to a maglia di lana Grin

HopHoppityHop · 01/08/2019 16:35

Mine do in winter and in the in between times when a jumper is too warm but a t-shirt too cold. They're 7/9 years old

genome · 01/08/2019 16:40

Mine never have. They had the baby vests with poppers until about 2 and then just t-shirt/top and a jumper/cardigan on top of cold.

NoWordForFluffy · 01/08/2019 16:56

Yes, our two wear vests. DD sleeps in hers too as she's a hot sleeper! DS wears his in bed in summer.

They like the extra warmth in winter from what I can tell!

Bobbybobbins · 01/08/2019 16:57

Only under pjs for an extra layer in the winter

carsleyladiessociety · 01/08/2019 17:36

One of mine does he sleeps in a vest in the summer when it's really hot and wears fecking expensive wool/silk vests in the autumn/winter/spring because it can get to -10 where we live and the little bugger goes blue when he gets cold--

Other one who really doesnt feel the cold is more likely to be wearing just a vest and shorts in the winter. Trousers are reserved for the very coldest of days only- they wear shorts all year round at school out of choice.

BitOfAKerfuffle · 01/08/2019 17:36

Yes my 2 both wear vests usually cotton sleeveless vests but in the dead of winter they wear thermal vests. In this weather no vest just tshirt but if DS was still at school he would insist on wearing his vest under his polo shirt because aparently the emblem on the polo shirt tickles him so regardless of whether it's 30o he insists he wears a vest on school days

PancakeAndKeith · 01/08/2019 17:39

I teach reception about half the children wear vests.

I once taught a boy who had only recently arrived from India. He wore a knitted wool tank top under his school top, next to his skin! It was the height of summer but the poor love felt freezing.

Notmydalek · 01/08/2019 17:51

Pancake poor boy. Hard to imagine but everything is relative I guess.

Mine dont as they say they are too warm in school with the heating on. I gave up buying them

randomsabreuse · 01/08/2019 18:47

Our school is hotter than most saunas when the heating is on - definitely no vests!

ReginaGeorgeous · 01/08/2019 18:50

Mine do. My eldest is four and has raynauds so I keep her bundled up in the winter.

KindergartenKop · 01/08/2019 20:24

Mine do. They don't wear coats at playtime for some unknown reason.

CassianAndor · 01/08/2019 20:30

This winter is the first that DD (9) didn’t wear a vest at all.

Before that she would wear a vest in winter and some of spring and autumn. Never in the summer.

user1493494961 · 01/08/2019 20:40

My DGC wear them in winter (I can remember liberty bodices Op!)

Mumoftwoyoungkids · 01/08/2019 20:41

Mine do. (9 and 6.) Both very sporty and “outdoorsy”.

For winter training dd wears 2 sleeveless vests, a long sleeve thermal vest and then her kit including her winter jacket. Can’t tog up in a big coat because it would get in the way. She then sheds layers as she warms up whilst try and jog on the spot to stop hyperthermia setting in!

NerrSnerr · 01/08/2019 20:42

My daughter chooses not to wear vests. I'd check with your grandchildren's parents that they'll actually use the vests before buying so it's not wasted.

My in-laws buy a couple of winter coats for my children because they worry they're cold (mainly because when we visit they don't wear a coat in the car or on the 2 metre journey from the car to the house). It's annoying because they don't need so many!
