I've bought DH a stage 1 qualification course for the weekend. It says on the instructions what gear he needs to take - he has most of it apart from the specialist footwear. He needs non marking trainers and deck shoes or yachting wellies.

Can anyone give me examples? He's not comfortable in wellies so I've googled deck shoes but they don't look very practical!

Leather deck shoes, Musto, Sebago etc. Socks are a must as it gets colder than you think.

Thanks @scaryteacher .

Do you mean these? Also, what about wellies?

And gloves? Some look like their fingers are missing?!

A bit like those - but don't Google Musto or you'll have heart failure at the prices!

Yes to gloves if he's winching or doing rope work, as your hands can get hurt.

Dh once went from novice to offshore yachtmaster in 18 months, so be careful in what you encourage him in. It's a bloody time consuming and expensive hobby and you can become a sailing widow.

@WelshMoth yes some gloves have all their fingers missing or first finger and thumb. It means you can fiddle with knots and ropes and shackles easier than with full fingered gloves. Not sure what style yachties favour - dinghy sailors tend to save full finger gloves for winter when its cold but it might be different with winches and so on. Just don't go for decathlon gloves - I got given a pair once and ropes just slid straight through my hands, no grip at all.
