Need help identifying books!

This is driving me mad, two young adult novels so I probably read them early to mid 90s. I only have really vague descriptions though!

First one- a young boy befriends an elderly woman, and she teaches him about life kind of story. She introduces him to classical music and I remember him saying you can't dance to it and her line is 'why must one have to?' That's all I can remember!

Second book about a girl who breaks up from school after doing her exams, she lives with her single mother in some kind of co-op and the mum regularly has interesting characters dropping in. The mum also talks about how she was at Greenham Common. There is a part where her classmate destroys his books after they leave school and she gets really angry about books being ruined. I also think maybe she gets a job in a posh clothes shop?

Sorry I know it's not much to go on, any ideas would be appreciated.

I did have an inkling that the book about the boy might have been Paula Danziger but I can't find any of her stuff that fits.

Love these threads. Though I'm afraid I'm absolute rubbish at helping.

Second book rings a vague bell - bit about being angry at books being destroyed!!

Yes I think he might have burnt the books, or ripped them up, can't remember which. It was a hardback from the library. Arghh it's so irritating!

When i wrote "One's definitely the Cat Ate my Gymsuit" what I actually meant was I know what one is for certain, but not sure about the others!!!

Mind you I don't recall any of them being about a boy. 🤔

GlitchStitch · 30/07/2019 16:58

Yes I don't think now it was a Paula Danziger book, I read some of hers, Robert Leeson and Lynn Reid Banks quite a bit so thought maybe it was one of theirs but I've looked through their works and can't find anything that fits. It was definitely a boy in the first book.

Second book could possibly be Goggle Eyes, Anne Fine.

GlitchStitch · 30/07/2019 17:29

Thanks, I've had a look, it's not Goggle Eyes. That did sound familiar though, think I've read it before!
